Simplex3's SuSE Linux Converts Thread

Looking for some help moving to Linux? Drop the question here and we'll see what I can do. Some topics I expect we'll cover:

1. Installation
2. What apps do what?
3. My (hardware) isn't working (right)
4. Multi-media issues

Remember, if you need help sooner rather than later:

Kubuntu users:
1. Launch Konversation from the "Internet" menu.
2. Connect to #kubuntu by double clicking on it.
3. Ask away.

Suse users:
1. Install X-Chat
2. Connect to the Freenode network
3. Join the #suse channel
4. Ask away. There are usually about 280 helpful souls in there.

I'll also try to keep this up as a sort of FAQ. Non-question-specific posts will have a large, bold heading (see post #2).

*Note: Don't forget you can try out Linux without installing anything on your PC at all. Download one of the LiveCD versions, burn it to a disc, then reboot the PC with the LiveCD in the drive and your computer will load Linux and your hard disk will not be changed. You can get them at either of these links:
http://www.kubuntu.com/
http://www.novell.com/products/susel...rors_isos.html
http://www.mepis.org/
http://www.knoppix.org/

*Note: If I start asking you to run a bunch of things from a command prompt it isn't because that's the only way to do it, it's because that's the only way I can "control" what is happening on your end.

I did XGL/Compiz on Suse, looks much like Beryl.

...and yeah, it makes those Vista losers crap their pants, especially when they see how little hardware it takes me to run it.

I love that stuff. Just have no need for it.

Everytime I try Linux, several by the way, I keep coming back to Windows. I just don't care for the customization. Plus, they have nothing even close to Money 2005 which I use religiously.

I'm running a term server on my XP box that I log into for outlook and misc other Winblows crap like that. If I had another gig of RAM I'd probably just run MS in a VM for the few things that I need.

Which Linux are you using? My problem is this, Linux always seems to have these delays when I click on things. For whatever reason the response time just seems a tad slower than Windows. When I click on say, Firefox, it feels like it takes more time for it to start up in Linux than in Windows. Got very frustrating for me.

As far as my windows programs go, I have to have Money. I also have Half Life 2 which will not run on my computer under Linux through Wine but runs like a champ under windows. The problem here is that the emulator used in Linux eats up enough of my resources that HL2 can't utilize everything it needs to run smoothly.

Then pick better games :P

Honestly I couldn't make a full change either. Too many kids games and stuff is tied to MS still.

I'm running Fedora Core 6 on a 3.0 Ghz Intel with 1G of RAM with no pause at all. The way I figure it is that I will use it as much as I can till I don't need to use MS anymore. Sure it is down the road, but I really would like to avoid Vista.

Better games than HL2. Please name me some.

Mine is a 2.4 Ghz Intel P4 with 1G of RAM. I shouldn't be experiencing these delays on Linux either but they are there. That is why I was wondering if it is just the version I am running. I have never tried Fedora though. Is there a free DL of that somewhere too?

I actually had my first wave of Vista problems today. Crash dump while I was posting on the planet. I haven't seen a BSoD since Win98. Absolutely nothing was running other than Firefox at the time.

"Hello, M$ tech support.

Well have you tried rebooting? Didn't help, huh? How about reinstalling Windows. Still no luck? Do you have any software installed that you didn't buy from us? Oh, you DOOO, do you? Well, did that POS vendor pay us to get the Vista logo? No?!?!?"

One always has to wonder about MS, I mean how many times have they written code to make other peoples software run slower or be less stable. Of course honestly, most of the issues I have had in Windows have been from MS Office of all things, lol! MS has always been sort of an odd company to me, they are not so much innovators as they are the best followers in the world, and if they can't follow they will try to buy you and claim those as their innovations. I mean heck, the latest media player is a copy of itunes a couple years after it came out, but they added some nice features as well.

Okay, I'm just rambling with no real point now.

That could have been a fun call, MS just has to love it when people call to say that Firefox crashed their system.
