Talking Draft Prospects

We've got perhaps the biggest, most consequential draft coming up for this franchise since 2008. The Chiefs have all seven of their picks, and will certainly be picking up an additional four in compensatory picks, one of which is assuredly a 3rd rounder.

As a result, it's important to familiarize ourselves with as much of this draft class as possible. I started a thread last offseason that discussed late rounders that was generally well liked and spurred tons of great conversation on all sorts of draft picks we normally wouldn't talk about, so I'm going to duplicate that idea this year, only discussing all talents, rather than just the mid- and lower-round ones.

The OP will be continually updated to show the talent I'm reviewing by position. Keep in mind as I list these players that I am generally listing their round projections, but it is not a strict big board, as I likely won't have a big board put together until May.

Spoiler!

I like Kendricks, but not as much as Perryman or, as it must now be said, Paul Dawson.

OT Ronnie Stanley, Notre Dame -- It's been two years, and we still don't have a great idea of what John Dorsey likes in his offensive tackles, but Eric Fisher's as clear a prototype as we have. In that vein, Stanley fits that prototype to a T, as an elite athlete with ridonkulously long arms and one of THE best kickslides I've seen in years. Stanley's seen a boom in his value recently due to strong performances against NFL-caliber passrushers, and for good reason. He's an ideal 6'6", 315 lbs, and moves like a tight end in space. His athleticism is about as good as Eric Fisher's, which is among the best I've ever seen in a tackle. His perfect kickslide negates any speed rush to the outside, and he mirrors extremely well. At the second level, Stanley's athleticism is elite -- he would be fantastic in schemes that regularly pull their tackles into space. Stanley's weakness is that he greatly struggles with power. Despite being 315 lbs, he looks slight and doesn't get much push in the run game -- though he does wall off his defender reliably well. Talented edge rushers consistently earned success against him by throwing their body into him, often pushing him into the lap of his QB. He'll need to pack on considerable weight and muscle, and lower his base more in pass protection, but if he can do that, he's got Pro Bowl upside.

DE/OLB Nate Orchard, Utah -- How much do you trust your coaching staff? If you have eminent faith that they can turn any project into success, or if they have a track record of doing so, Orchard could be a worthwhile investment. He has a lot of tools to work with, but leaves a lot of them on the table due to the fact that he is still quite raw at his position (he was recruited to Utah as a WR). He has a great frame for a rushbacker at 6'4", 250 lbs, and could bulk up a bit if a team wanted him as a 4-3 DE. He could get much, much stronger, and, as a former receiver, is oozing with athleticism that will likely get him noticed at the Combine. His technique is extremely inconsistent, however, he doesn't have that many passrushing moves, and he doesn't play as strong, big, or fast as he is -- so how the hell has he been so productive for the Utes? Because Orchard is an incredibly enthusiastic worker w/ a neverending motor on the football field. Orchard plays with great hand strength, making his sheer size just too much for most tackles to handle, often times getting his sacks on a 2nd or 3rd effort. He's a very hard worker in the run game as well, and when he keeps his gap and technique, he can dictate to tackles on run downs and make it difficult to run on him -- in a way reminding me of the Justin Houston we saw at Georgia. That attitude and hard work on the field will make him extremely attractive early on the second day of the draft, as a (likely 3-4) team dreams about combining that athleticism and power with better discipline and technique.

Looking back, I thought Jerry Jones was a dipshit taking Martin at 16 but it proved to be a solid pick and did wonders for the Cowboys. I'm resigned to us needing to pick OL in the 1st and get a WR in the 2nd. This year is supposed to be solid at WR in rds 2-5 .

But if Dorsey stays with BPA regardless of position ????

Dorsey, like all GMs, drafts BPA at a position of need.

Of those losses, really only Sean Smith is the one you need to brace for, and I think he gets extended...

That's a sweet list. Yes Smith will get extended but we need to draft a franchise corner anyway.

No major losses to worry about. I love Berry but realize he's replaceable after the way our pass D performed. We did miss him in run support.

This is as good as any place to post it so my agenda is to build the #1 defense in the league. After that we shore up the line and add a true consistent threat at WR. Championship D!

Always right? Not even close man. I've never been that way. I Still think the SEC and ACC are better conferences though. Good for Oregon and Ohio State though. They deserve it.

You need to look at who is a UFA in 2016 to follow the pattern. All the major players are on defense. DJ, Poe, Berry, and Hali are all 2016 UFAs. I think we'll go defense in the first round this year if he follows the same pattern.
