I don't think that can be true. There are 74 basketball or football programs that had a net profit of 5 million dollars or more in the 2010-11 season out of 139 total major conference teams. Only four lost money, and two of them were USC and Oregon basketball whose football programs netted a combined 20 million.

If you get rid of fees and subsidies, and expect an Athletic Department to be self-sufficient before it can claim to be profitable, here's a list of the only profitable schools last year.
K-State $20,106,935 Texas $16,609,111 LSU $15,462,427 Alabama $14,195,164 Florida $11,989,355 Michigan $10,621,815 Arkansas $10,524,624 Oklahoma $9,974,916 Ohio State $9,528,952 Okla. State $9,507,375 Texas A&M $8,975,871 Georgia $8,384,182 Oregon $7,125,702 Purdue $6,773,110 Iowa $4,731,395 Miss. State $2,573,373 Nebraska $1,763,272 Kentucky $1,219,181 Illinois $403,425

oh, and yeah, there are accounting gimmicks. Some schools have a very rigorous practice of using budget codes and charge the athletic department with their share of the electric bill, building maintenance, etc, while other schools are more loosey-goosey, just pay for all of that stuff for the university as general expense without explicitly charging the athletic department, etc.
Even with that though, there aren't many profitable athletic departments, but thats not necessarily a bad thing. The school's debate team and the commencement ceremony are also probably not profitable, but we decide we want those things and are willing to pay for it. If the school's athletics need another couple million, we may decide that is a worthwhile expense to keep the team at the competitive level they are at. Thats why you've got to compare FSU's expense as best we can to their peers to see if they are being unreasonably wasteful, unless their revenues are just wildly too low and there's nothing they can do to fix that (like move to the Big 12), in which case they are spending out of their league.

Here is a digest of the latest Big 12/Expansion/Contract/Division Alignment Rumors
1. Many "insiders" are saying FSU and Clemson are as close to officially being in the Big 12 starting 2013 without a signature/public announcement as you can get. It would take a very peculiar turn of events for this not to occur, so look for us to be back to 12 soon. 2. FOX, pending expansion back to 12 teams with the teams highly rumored to be the expansion candidates wants to alter its 2nd Tier contract. This will mean more money per school, an extension of the 13 to probably around 16 and a weekly Friday Night marquee game to be aired on the parent network (not FSN, FOX). FOX is seeing its marketing value for scripted shows nosedive and non-scripted show are following that trend as well, so they want sports for prime time. This could push the annual payout into the 24-27 million dollar range, not sure if that includes CCG, Champions Bowl, or NC playoffs. 3. Rumors are that division alignment was trending towards two Texas teams in the "East". Baylor, in particular, was throwing a fit about this. In a somewhat surprising move, OU has indicated that if the NC playoffs favor a weighted RPI rather than a conference champions model (and that is the trend), then OU would go to the "East" keeping UT as a permanent rival. They would join FSU, CU, WVU and ISU. The Texas and Kansas schools would comprise the "West". Oklahoma sees this as an opportunity to expand its national reach, develop another big rivalry besides Texas in replacing Nebraska with FSU. 4. Texas is OK with this because they are cautiously optimistic Notre Dame will eventually be a full member of the Big 12, probably by 2016 when the NBC contract runs out. ND would join Texansas and most likely Georgia Tech would be in the East. 5. Permanent cross division rivals beyond OU-UT are speculated as such: Since the "East" would have OU, FSU and CU want some state of Texas exposure. OSU would want the same consideration. ISU and KSU would continue Farmageddon and WVU becomes linked to KU. These are all rumors from alleged insiders, so don't shoot the messenger!
