The Kansas City Chiefs won the Super Bowl without a star wide receiver, but they could reportedly make an elite offense even scarier by acquiring DeAndre Hopkins.

NFL insider Benjamin Albright told PHNX Cardinals that Kansas City is the "primary suitor" for Hopkins. He doesn't know the draft compensation the Cardinals would receive, but he said it's more likely they get a second-round pick than a first.

After the 2022 season, theScore's Jordan Schultz reported that the Cardinals plan to trade Hopkins this offseason.

Arizona hired a new general manager and head coach after a disappointing four-win season, and Hopkins is set to make $19.45 million (with a $30.75 million cap hit) in 2023. The Cardinals could seek a clean slate by moving the three-time All-Pro wideout, who turns 31 in June.

Hopkins began his Cardinals career by tallying 1,407 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. However, multiple lower body injuries limited him to 10 games in 2021, and he served a six-game suspension to start the 2022 season for violating the NFL's PED policy.

Yet he remains an impact player when on the field. Hopkins totaled 474 receiving yards in six full games with quarterback Kyler Murray last season.

Now imagine what he can accomplish when catching passes from Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs flourished without a star replacement for Tyreek Hill, but they could still benefit by solidifying the position this offseason. JuJu Smith-Schuster is a free agent after garnering 78 catches for 933 yards on a one-year deal. The depth chart features several talented question marks in Mecole Hardman, Kadarius Toney, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling.

Adding Hopkins could be great news for Kansas City, but terrible for all opposing defenses.

I'm not saying the worst-case scenario is going to happen, I'm saying that it's very possible that all these guys might struggle. Or rather, that several of them might struggle. It's mathematically possible, even likely.

But to say that we could have Toney miss a bunch of games and Skyy busts, and somehow we still have a top-5 offense with the Ross brothers (who probably won't play 17 games combined), Richie (undersized version of Skyy), Justin Watson (ST player more than WR) and Rice? That's not likely at all.

We did fine with Hill missing long stretches in the past, and a lower floor WR group than this one.

And I plan on nothing from either Ross. Of the two I like Justyn's chances more, but I'm still not even factoring him in.

Skyy's not going to bust. It's just highly unlikely, in my opinion. I just think his path to snaps was blocked last year by veterans, and coming from smaller college football, there was an adjustment period. By all scouting reports, he's going to run elite routes and catch everything. That's a skillset that'll play.

MVS will do what he does, and that's needed and fine.

Ritchie and Watson are your insurance policies. They're not going to light it up, but they are capable and have to be accounted for, and between the two, you can cover any WR position when needed.

And Rice I'm super high on, and those of you who love Dhop should be all about this kid. He's got experience in a system that deployed him in the slot and outside, at every WR position. I think he'll hit the ground running more than Moore did, and he has less blockage in front of him, as he's a unique skill-set in the room.

We're going to be fine.

How much will Rice contribute in his rookie season? Seems like rookie WR under Reid don't do much in year 1. Hopefully there is a vet cut after June like Corey Davis that can help.

He’ll get action, we didn’t trade up in the 2nd round to have him on the bench. He has already worked out with Mahomes and I’m sure they’ll be at it again soon. Day 1 starter for sure.

I think that's the wrong way to look at things.

Frankly at this point bringing in a DHop only stunts the growth of guys like Tooney, Moore, and Riice. Playing time is what speeds up the learning curve. Toonie and Moore really need to step up. Rice needs to be ready.

Successful vets mentoring young/inexperienced players is the number one most desired situation because it creates the best learning environment and fastest improvement of players historically.

Hell, it's not even just football, it's in any human endeavor, whether it's sports or business, aviation, Skilled trades, even working dog training. Having a successful veteran teach/mentor a less experienced person is probably the most common training method on Earth.

In the NFL obvious examples are Jerry Rice mentored by both Dwight Clark and Montana (Jerry has acknowledged Dwight's mentoring as one of the biggest reasons for his success multiple times).

Jerry then passed it forward by mentoring John Taylor and then Terrell Owens, both of whom praised Jerry many times for his mentorship. TO turned around and mentored several WRs including Steve Smith and Brandon Marshall.

Chris Carter mentored Randy Moss, both on and off the field, and Randy has credited Carter as instrumental in Randy taking that next step and becoming a HOF player.

In Chiefs land, did we not see George Karlaftis taken under the wings of Chris Jones, Frank Clark and Carlos Dunlap, and did we not see George's improvement over the last 8 games of the season?

Bringing in DHop wouldn't stunt the growth of our young WRs. That's sheer fallacy. in reality, it would likely flatten the learning curve and make them better WRs/players/professionals in a much shorter period down the road.

You want Rice to fully develop and maximize all of that potential? You could hardly do better than to put him in the same room with his idol, Deandre Hopkins, and let him learn first-hand how Hopkins does everything that he does, from physical training, game prep, film study and analysis, practice, reading defenses, setting up DBs, footwork/release mechanics, hand-fighting, winning the leverage battle, in-game situational awareness, mental toughness, etc.

Probably every one of our young WRs could use that sort of mentoring from an elite veteran future HOFer WR.

I'm complete torn on this one. I'm not clamouring for a D-Hop guy, but I can see both the value of mentorship and the value of just giving people time to play. Looks like we'll roll with the latter though

To be clear, I'm not saying that our WRs won't be successful without a mentor, because I'm sure at least a couple of them will regardless, because they're good football players. Guys like Toney and Rice almost certainly.

But the time it takes for them to develop could be shortened considerably if they have a real live working blueprint for success right in front of them. They'll deal with a lot less trial-and-error struggles and just be able to focus on what really works.

Of course. But there are things that Pat can't teach a WR because he's not a WR. For example, Pat doesn't know anything about release footwork, hand-fighting, etc.

Travis could help some in those areas, except that he isn't a WR either. Travis has an advantage in every situation, either due to his size or his speed, depending on whether he's facing a DB or a LB. He's never the guy playing from a disadvantage. He also doesn't run certain routes, like deep 30+yd go-routes; he's not a boundary receiver.

I mean, think about it. Mitch Morse back in 2018 probably helped Pat with sliding protection, identifying the Mike/Sam or whatever, right? But was Mitch able to help Pat with reading a zone coverage?

So yeah, I totally agree that Pat and Travis can and will try to mentor our young WR group as much as they can. But they aren't WRs. And there are some things about playing WR that pretty much only WRs can teach.
