I wouldn't be surprised if he's not signed with a team sometime during the season. There are just too many articles circulating right now across the country and too much local press coverage for an NFL team to take on that PR nightmare right now.

This was a writeup in the Toronto Telegram in 1971 -- the kid was 10 at the time:

Quote:
No. 9 with big No. 9 aspirations

By JOHN IABONI -- Toronto Telegram

The following is an excerpt of John Iaboni's story about a 10-year-old hockey phenom from Brantford. It first appeared in the Toronto Telegram on Oct. 28, 1971.

BRANTFORD -- There's a Little No. 9 in this town who has ambitions of replacing the recently retired Big No. 9 of the Detroit Red Wings, Gordie Howe.

And, as with his hero's prowess in finding the net and beating rival goaltenders, 10-year-old Wayne Gretzky has proven he can score goals, too. Now in his fifth novice A season with Brantford's Nadrofsky Steelers, the 4-foot-10, 70-pound defenceman-winger-centre has notched 369 goals thus far.

That's including a five-goal and two-assist performance last Saturday at North Park Arena, which paced Nadrofsky to its seventh consecutive pre-season win, 7-4 over the league unbeaten MTHL Toronto Kings West Hill Highland Farms.

The goal production currently stands at 41 for the 1971-72 campaign with league action in the Brantford-participating Hub League scheduled to commence in two weeks.

Wayne impressed his coaches in his initial tryout when he was five years old. He earned a centre berth in the 10-and-under novice league then and scored one goal while his team captured the group title.

The following season, Gretzky upped his goals total to 27 as Brantford once again won the group championship.

Prior to the 1969-70 season, Nadrofsky coach Bob Hockin presented Wayne with the No. 9 sweater and Gretzky responded with a 105-goal performance as a defenceman to lead Brantford to the group crown.

Last year as a penalty killer, power-play specialist, centre and defenceman, Wayne collected a phenominal 196 goals as Nadrofsky won the Ontario championship. Along with his list of team and individual firsts, Wayne was selected an all-star each season.

Achievements of this sort certainly deserve a few hearty boasts, but the Grade 5 student at Greenbrier Public School remains a very modest young man.

He really enjoys hockey and doesn't mind playing every shift if coach Hockin asks him to. Yes Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito and Bobby Hull are good hockey players, but as for the first two he doesn't like Boston and with the latter he is enhanced only with his slapshot.

"Now Gordie Howe is my kind of player. He had so many tricks around the net no wonder he scored so many goals," Gretzky said. "I'd like to be just like him.

"And if I couldn't play hockey I'd like to play baseball with the Oakland Athletics and Vida Blue."

As the players congratulated each other before heading for the dressing room, Darren Thompson, an eight-year-old spectator, asked if your correspondent was a newspaper reporter.

"Yes," came the reply.

"Oh, are you going to write a book on Wayne Gretzky, he's good you know."

No Darren, not yet, but maybe someday, soon.
He was a national icon before he could drive.

I believe Gretzky is singularly unique in all of sports. Nobody has ever been followed so closely from such a young age by so many people, only to live up to they hype.

Ivey has the type of large body that would be good for NT. Hope KC got him.

Former University of Kentucky linebacker Micah Johnson will attend minicamp this week with the NFL's New York Giants on a tryout basis, according to the team's website.

On Monday, the Giants released their minicamp roster, which included 13 undrafted free-agent signees and 23 players who will try out for a roster spot, including Johnson, who led the Wildcats with 105 tackles as a senior in 2009.
Johnson, a former Kentucky Mr.Football from Fort Campbell High School, was not selected in last week's NFL draft.

Former UK tight end T.C. Drake (Chiefs) and offensive lineman Zipp Duncan (Eagles) signed as free agents.

Eastern's Signor has his kicking foot in Chiefs' door

CHARLESTON -- Without a crowd, a scoreboard or television, the pressure might still be on Austin Signor this week.

Eastern Illinois’ All-Ohio Valley Conference kicker is leaving Thursday to attend a Kansas City Chiefs minicamp.

“I’m feeling ready,” Signor said. “I’m trying to stay level headed about things. I’m trying to keep my leg in shape. It’s the first time I’ve had to be in game shape during the off-season.”

Signor settled for the invitation received earlier from the Chiefs after no free-agent offers came immediately after last week’s NFL draft which had no kickers chosen.

“I was more so expecting a free agency signing,” Signor said. “I was in Carolina. It came down to me and the Ohio State kid and they took the other kid.”

Now Signor is looking to show the Chiefs he could either compete with Ryan Succop as a field-goal kicker or that he is worth a roster spot by his kickoff talents.

The 2009 Mr. Irrelevant as the last player chosen in the NFL draft, Succop then showed his relevancy by tying a league record for rookies by making 82.6 percent of his field goals.

Whether Signor has to take a roster spot from Succop remains to be seen.

“I can tell you his strength,” the EIU product said. “He made 24 out of 28 field goals. His kickoff it’s not his main strength but he is a good kicker.”

While Signor made 14 of 22 field goals including a 48-yard last season for Eastern’s Ohio Valley Conference championship team, his forte might be on kickoffs where his 27 touchbacks led the nation.

“They do have a kicker already who had a good year,” Signor said. “Hopefully something works out. I actually did already have the mini-camp offer before the draft. Coach Steve Hoffman is the special teams coach. He let me know he liked me a lot. Since they had a kicker who did so well he couldn’t offer me a free-agent contract yet.”

Signor is hoping to make it two years in a row that a free agent from EIU makes the Chiefs’ roster.

Former NCAA Football Championship Subdivision All-American defensive end Pierre Walters made the Chiefs as an outside linebacker last year and remains with the team.

Walters was back in Charleston watching last Saturday’s EIU spring intrasquad game from the sidelines as the Chief and potential Chief had conversations.

“I actually did know then I had the invitation to the minicamp,” Signor said. “We didn’t really talk about their kicker. It only takes one opportunity to get it going.”

Eastern did have offensive lineman Otis Hudson chosen in the fifth round of the NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengalis while another offensive lineman Chris Campbell received a free-agent chance with the Green Bay Packers.

Hudson and Murray State defensive end Austen Lane were the only two Ohio Valley Conference players drafted.

Highly regarded Ryan Perrilloux, the former Louisiana State quarterback who transferred to Jacksonville State, had to settle for a free agent chance with the Minnesota Vikings where his future might partially hinge on a Brett Favre decision.

Jacksonville State also had linebacker Torrey Davis sign as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

I'd rather not be Dallas and use a roster spot on a kicker when Succop is very capable of having great kickoffs.

Use that extra spot on the DL or OL IMO.

So any ideas on Micah Johnson? Not drafted and now doing tryouts. He does not seem to be in demand. I know his speed was not great with a 4.84 40, but he seems to be a good football player on the field.

I agree when it comes to the final roster but at this point it does not hurt to have another kicker and punter for the camps. Lots of players to kick to. Also it allows for the kickers and coach Hoffman to exchange ideas and techniques with the new guys.

last year Miami, where hoffman came from, brought in Barth to compete with Dan carpenter who just came off a good rookie year. Actually i can't remember if they signed barth for camp or just worked him out. Anyway, they made a point to keep the pressure on him and not just be satisfied with his good first season.

Also by keeping up with Arrowhead Pride, it looks like they worked out quite a few K/P's even the guy NE drafted. In the group of GM's he is the closest too, I wouldn't be suprised if Hoffman is working guys out for teams like Miami NE and the falcons. He is pretty much the only guru out there as he was a punter himself and gets guys with strong legs and what he thinks is the right attitude/mentallity and turns out some good players doing that. He's been a great addition to the staff and all it took was someone givnig him the main st's coach title instead of just asst st's or kicking coach. Great gamble so far.
