Chiefs day in camp for Wednesday

What you need to know about …

The Offense

The Chiefs worked extensively on offense both inside the 20 and inside the 5. Ricky Stanzi, who will direct the No. 2 offense on Saturday at St. Louis, connected with rookie free-agent Brandon Kinnie, of Grandview, on the sideline and with Jamar Newsome in the back of the end zone and across the middle. Tight end Steve Maneri used his 6-foot-6 frame to catch a 10-yard TD pass from Stanzi and a 5-yarder from Matt Cassel. Brady Quinn scored on a naked bootleg and threw a nice pass to Jeremy Horne.

The defense

Strong safety Eric Berry made the play of the day when he jumped a route, intercepted Cassel’s pass intended for Dexter McCluster and took it back for a touchdown. Cornerback Jacques Reeves, playing left corner in place of injured Brandon Flowers, broke up a pass intended for Jon Baldwin and denied a completion intended for Steve Breaston. Tamba Hali would have been credited with a sack when he closed in on Cassel, but there’s no hitting the quarterback in training camp.

Injury report

Cornerbacks Brandon Flowers (heel) and Travis Daniels (groin/hamstring), linebacker Cameron Sheffield (groin), running back Cyrus Gray (hamstring) and defensive lineman Ethan Johnson (concussion) were joined by rookie safety DeQuan Menzie (hip) on the sidelines. Rookie wide receiver Junior Hemingway was in pads but was in and out of practice.

Daily battle

Rookie kicker Matt Szymanski handled three of the four kickoffs in the preseason opener against Arizona and did quite well, kicking three for touchbacks and one 5 yards deep that was returned to the 25. But even if Szymanski kicks a few more touchbacks in the climate-controlled conditions of Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis on Saturday night, it would just be to showcase him. Szymanski, an undrafted free agent from SMU, handled most of the extra points during Wednesday’s practice. It’s unlikely the Chiefs will use a precious roster spot for a kickoff specialist, and Ryan Succop, who has been a little erratic in training camp, has little to worry about. Succop, who made two short field goals against the Cardinals, sent his two kickoffs against Arizona for touchbacks as well.

I'm going to look at this as a head coach trying to give reps to guys to see how they perform. Probably wrong, but that is just the way it appears to me.

Jesus Christ. Why do people go out of their way to mock young players who appear to be taking the next step in the development of their NFL careers in training camp practices?

Jalil Brown obtains the confidence of the coaches and the defense, and makes some plays. Then when a mistake happens it's all, "LOOOOOOLL I THOT HE WUZ TRAINING CAMP GOD!!"

Name anybody like that. Jon Baldwin. Jon Asamoah. Justin Houston. ****, most of our defensive line are having ****ing great camps- each guy has significantly improved over last year.

Yes, training camp practices are often misleading, but when a guy is doing good work day in and day out, more than likely that's a sign of good things that will be on display during the regular season. Not always, but often.

And it's either they play the role of training camp god, or they play like feces. Which would you assholes rather see?
