The Fishing Thread

So how many of you are into fishing? What do you fish for and how often do you go? Any tips for how to get the monster of your choice, lures, bait, flies? Feel free to throw in a fishing story or two as well. What was your best or worst experience while out fishing?

I caught 4-Croaker, 3-Spadefish off the Avalon Pier in the Outer Banks, NC. last week. Threw them all back because they weren't worth the work. Not really a good night. People were bringing in all sorts of strange stuff- rays, eels, a few sand sharks, crabs. All in all I felt lucky...

Well, I’ve dangled my bait in front of plenty of gutter snipes, but don’t know that I’ve ever heard of a rare brown snub nosed sewer trout.

montauk s.p. early june,
I took my 9 y\o son fishing for his first real alone camping trip with dad. Rain the first day and a half, and fishing was really rough. He was wet, it was cold, and no matter what I tried I could not get the boy on a fish. It was looking really bad, and I felt like a complete failure cause other than finding a pet turtle, he wasn;'t having any fun. Thanks to a really kind local guide named Dennis who was fishing near us, my son easily limited and then some two days in a row. (we kept just two for dinner both days, and then caught and released.) I was actually pretty close to doing what he was doing, but he has a special small salmon egg which the bows seemed to prefer. My son's biggest was around 3'. I saw that one headed straight into a brush pile, and without me saying anything, my young man lifted his rod tip up and to the left, and turned the sunofabitch away from the obstruction, and played him perfect, until I could net for the sportsman's release. There are no words to describe that feeling, it is the best in the world, although it does get me every time I think about it.

Fishing is in the genes I think.

Made it to Cooke City last weekend for the brother fishing/Atv/beer drinking trip. Caught lots up cuts and had some fantastic riding.

I haven't fished much since boy #2 came along. Here's my summer rundown, though:

1) Grangeville, ID: while visiting my friend up there, we used float tubes to hit a nearby spring fed pond that had been stocked with rainbows a while back. While there weren't many fish in it, the fish that were there (or at least the ones we caught) weren't under 5 lbs. We hooked about 10 fish total, each one going 5+ lbs. Pretty awesome on a 6wt.

2) Cour D'Alene, ID: fished a little bit on a small lake where we stayed. Caught a bunch of crappie and bass on wiggle minnows (sweet fly for all your fly fisherman out there) and a fly called Jim's Ozark Spider that is basically a heavy spider jig fly.

3) Perdido Key, FL: fished in the surf, from a jetty, and in kayak. Caught quite a few ladyfish, reds, and one spanish mackeral. Big time fun! I'd love to be able to fish the salt on the fly more. My coolest encounter didn't even involve hooking a fish. I was paddling my kayak and saw something out of the corner of my eye. Turned to look and saw a 50+ lb. tarpon porpoising close enough to the rear of my boat to touch. Scared the shit out of me in a good way.

4) Bella Vista, AR: the mother-in-law lives on the lakes up there, and I've taken quite a few trips up. The bass have been schooling in the middle of the day, crashing bait on the surface. Fishing for these on the fly is probably one of my favorite things to do, as you only get a couple of shots that have to be well-placed before the fish go under and move on. The wiggle minnow is my goto fly for this action. It definitely gets the heart pumping. Also have taken the older boy out a few times there and caught tons of panfish with him. He loves to "pet" the fish after we catch them.

If you haven't check out Catch Magazine, you need to do so now. Amazing fly fishing photography. It takes a while to load, but once it does, the browsing is seamless. So let it load in the background, then take a look.
