Why does everyone seem to have a hard on for Alex Smith as our backup? First off why would he want to come here? Go from SB contender to backup on the worse team in football? No thank you.

My point is, I think this notion that you have to have a veteran backup QB (veteran QB to me = guy who can no longer play) is about as out dated as "defense wins championships".

I like what Washington did last year. Draft Geno and also grab a mid round guy. Just get guys in here with talent.

A vet backup doesn't hurt if it is the right vet backup. Similar to the Mark Brunell situation. Someone that can step in and play decent, or start the season if need be...but a vet that knows his role. Geno could use a successful veteran in his corner no matter where he ends up.

This is one of the problems I have with the veteran backup theory.

You'll hear a lot of talk about the young starter going to him for advice. You know. Kinda like a coach.... If only QBs had a specific coach to do that job and help them out in these situations.

The other thing is that backup QBs are the closest thing to NFL "currency" like pitchers in baseball.

The successful teams not only have young backups with QBotF potential but they repeatedly trade them off for draft picks.

It's a different relationship. We all realize there is a QB coach in place. However, there are many things you can go to your vet about that you may not feel comfortable going to your QB coach with IMO.

It's a current NFL player/teammate that has been there/done that and live in the current NFL. Not the NFL Zorn grew up in.

So, Geno Smith is still the number one QB on my big board, but I think Zac Dysert has the most upside. Just look at the velocity on EVERY THROW. I think this guy shoots up the board at combine time.

Either drafter another in the 3rd or 4th round or make a trade.
