Browns Starting Campbell

Jason Campbell to start for Browns this week

Posted by Darin Gantt on October 23, 2013, 11:03 AM EDT
Jason Campbell
AP
After hedging for a few days, Browns coach Rob Chudzinski has made a change.

Per Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com, Chudzinski announced that quarterback Jason Campbell would start this week in place of Brandon Weeden.

If there was ever any doubt that the Browns were ready to hit reset at the position this offseason, this should clear it up.

Campbell was leapfrogged by Brian Hoyer earlier this season, and if they’re willing to replace Weeden at this point, he’s clearly not part of their future thinking.

Campbell started a game for the Bears in 2012, and has also played some replacement-level football for the Raiders and Redskins.

He’s the 20th Browns starting quarterback since 1999, while he sets the stage for No. 21.

Houston will handle Campbell in the same manner he handled Prior. Sack, sack, contain, sack, contain, crush, kill, demolish, lather rinse, repeat.

So, no, your comparison doesn't work.

It is, in fact, epically stupid.

Hasn't Campbell won at Arrowhead before?

He wasn't comparing Weeden to Ostertag. He was comparing Leftwich to Ostertag.

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

Yup.

He's just black - he's not athletic. In fact, he might actually be an easier mark than Weeden because of his unbelievably slow release.

I think this is a case where the Browns know that Campbell is simply less stupid with the football and therefore less likely to turn the ball over. If they can avoid turnovers and grind clock, they can hang with us and hope for a lucky break.

They had no chance - none whatsoever - with Weeden under center. He's just too reckless with the football and he'd have put them right where we want them; dealing with short fields and easy scores. Campbell, OTOH, can dink and dunk his way down the field, protect the football and keep them in it long enough for a lucky punch.

That was easily the poorest constructed sentence I have ever written. In my defense, thinking about Crennel makes me go insane.

Get your story straight.....

Everyone was falling all over how great Andre Woodson and Brian Brohm were going to be as QB's in the NFL. I made the comment that Brohm wasn't all that good (and where is he these days?) and that the only way that Woodson would make it in the NFL was as a 3rd down receiver because he had great hands and was decently mobile enough that he could mimic TE's.

I NEVER said to draft him..

I was really hoping for the easy win if they stuck with Weeden too

it will still be easy, but we always struggle against teams crappy back ups and keep it closer than it needs to be. (cough Case Kleenum)

Campbell's not a horrible quarterback by any means. I would've rather faced Weeden by a long shot.
