LNBS: What if Dorsey extends Alex for 3-4 years at backup compensation...

Please read op before voting.

I thought about this earlier today...

I highly doubt any team out there is going to give Alex very much in FA in terms of making a commitment to him as the starter. More than likely, he will have a hard time getting more than a 2 year deal on the open market, and not for top dollar.

Let's say John Dorsey sits down with Alex and they hammer out a deal that lowers Alex's cap this year and next and keeps him in KC as the backup to finish his career. Maybe the next 3-4 years.

Something like 4 years for 35-40 million dollars with a signing bonus similar to his 17m cap hit for 2017.

Cap hits by year (projected)

10
13
7
7

The deal would be contingent on Alex understanding that a big part of the contract is helping to groom Mahomes to be the starter and that the majority of the contract he will be played out as a backup.

Honestly, I think this would be a wise move for Alex and Dorsey.

It would create cap space for the team. That's huge with contracts for guys like Jones, Peters, Ford, Hill and others coming up in the next 3 years.
It would provide the team with great stability at the position, regardless of injuries. The team would need to get a backup. What better get backup than Alex Smith? Seriously, he would be the perfect premium backup for a Super Bowl team.

Everyone is saying that is too much for a backup contract but everyone forgets that that in a couple more years that will be backup pay the way the cap and contracts keep going up. There's several contract extensions Dorsey has done that had the board screaming but now look like steals in hindsight.

I would applaud KC paying a backup QB $40M over 4 years...

Yeah the guy you had unwavering trust in until a week and a half ago when he decided to implement "operation dump Alex" into motion.

I think the results are going to be out of whack because the poll options are the opposite of what the thread title suggests.

However, if he were OK with being a backup, and if he were taking only backup salary, that would be fine. The salary in the OP, hell no.

It'll never happen, but he would be the best backup in the league.

Better coaching that raised the level of play to the potential that this talent had.

More stable leadership at the top.

Alex Smith did exactly what any good back up is asked to do.

Manage the game and protect the ball.

I'm all for it if Dorsey can get it done. An established veteran backup who knows the system, built-in chemistry and rapport with the coaches/surrounding cast and has a winning record in this scheme. Can't beat that, especially at a CAP number that is significantly team-friendly.

However, my guess is, despite how some fans may feel about Alex Smith, he might be more highly regarded in league circles than we think and would find a starting gig somewhere and for decent $$$. There's always a team or two in need of a QB in free agency even if he's to be a bridge-gap starter while they develop the young QB they intend to draft or already have on the roster.

I'd take Alex as the backup, but it would halve the numbers you're suggesting, no more. And the problem with that is he would never agree to it because there is always some desperate QB needy team out there willing to throw too much money at a guy.

So, no.

It's a "Cortez burned his ships" moment. You get Alex off the roster to make it clear to the coaching staff, roster players, God and everyone that this team will succeed or fail with Pat Mahomes and he will be given every opportunity to prove he can do the former.
This.

Oh, and **** those cap hits right in the ear. I think the highest paid backup's cap hit is around $4-5M. Drew Stanton, maybe?

I see Bray as a guy happy to be signed for the league minimum, as the 3rd, emergency QB. He also has a similar style to Mahomes, albeit less arm, leg, and brain talent.

Alex retires after this season and we draft another QB in the same mold to develop. Be nice to have some money to pay our homegrown (Peters, Jones, Hill.)

I understand the criticism that you don't want the former starter (who was really good on ball security) around if Mahomes starts throwing a lot of picks his first year. You don't want Reid tempted by the safety and security of having that guy on the sideline. But, to Smith's credit, I think he would be a good soldier and not be in Reid's ear about wanting to be the starter, he'd be a good teammate.

That being said, Smith could start for 5 or 6 other teams in the league that are QB-poor and I expect that he will be starting for one of them in 2018 and making starting QB money as he rides out his last couple of years in the league.

Smith always should have been a veteran/journeyman QB/high end backup, but the league has been kind to him. I suspect there will be one more QB poor team that will bite.
