I think it is a misnomer to say DV doesn't care about defense. He does. The thing with DV is that he doesn't feel that it is good enough to just have a very good defense, he feels that you have to have the offense, and that it is easier to win the whole shabang if you have a great offense with a good defense than vice versa. That's why the No 1 stat he likes to look at is margin of victory, because if you have a large margin of victory, like his 1999 Rams team, that just means your team is clicking on all cylinders.

The problem hasn't been DV's beliefs. I've got no problem with the beliefs. It has been the execution that has been piss poor...

Do you propose we pick up 5 CBs? If you convert all of them to safety, we won't have anyone to play CB. Like it or not, we have to keep some of our defenders.

A Free Safety is your cover (or "pass") safety. He's generally not assigned a particular player (or really even area, save 'deep') and is "free" to react to the play and go where the play goes.

A Strong Safety is your safety on the tight-end side... He's your "run" safety. He needs to be a strong tackler and be able to shed blocks, as obviously, most teams will run to the strong side where there is an extra blocker (the te).


Free safety = pass safety
Strong safety = run safety

Yeah, it is kinda funny that Teicher is just now writing an article about this. Chiefs fans on this bb have been discussing this exact problem for years.

About NE, I would say yes, their front 7 is exceptional. But I would also say that their 2 safeties have played better than our starting 2 safeties, as well.

Without a doubt. That supports my point. I don't think what Troy Brown did was as exceptional as the media likes to make it out to be. He simply had the luxury of playng CB on a team that takes a hell of a lot of pressure off of the CBs.
