CRP, in the latest MAXIM magazine, Matthew McCona...oh, what the hell ever, anyway, he says he just bought a ranch in west Texas, 1600 acres and he says his nearest neighbor is 8 miles away. Nearest town, 17 miles away, pop. 897.

ranch in west Texas, 1600 acres and he says his nearest neighbor is 8 miles away. Nearest town, 17 miles away, pop. 897 Man... that would be great.
When I was a kid, the sports I participated in: swimming(huge sport in the South East) & soccer - I met quite a few Olympic swimmers (Tray Caucins & Mark Spitz), and I once met Pele -soccer GOD- he was a very nice person; hard to understand, but nice. :) When I came to KC to visit my grandparents, went to a lot of Royals games. Met all the greats: Brett, Wilson, White, Saberhagen, Quisemberry. We usually sat over the homefield dugout - so they saw us on a fairly regular basis... they'd strike up conversations with us kids - toss us foul balls & warm up balls, sign gloves - all that stuff. I remember every one of them as nice, humble individuals.

jl80,
LOL! I had the most unbelievable luck. It seemed that every other Sat night for about three months, I would be in a club where he would hang out. And the women he brought in were Playmate of the Month material. Hands down. |

Most of my brushes with "celebrities" have been in Springfield, MO
I have had a smoke with Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston outside of a Git-n-Go. Very nice and un-pretentious people. Talked for about 15 minutes. I also "helped" Kathleen Turner at the Brown Derby Wine Center. Total b!tch ... just walked around the store for an hour like she owned it, expected me to wait on her hand and foot (mine was about ready to go up her a$$) and then bought one bottle of cheap Zinfadel. I asked for her ID when she gave me her credit card. She wasn't at all happy ... I laughed for about an hour afterwards. Met John Goodman at a Sigma Phi Epsilon party at SMSU. He was a bit drunk at the time, but very, very cool. We talked for like an hour as he pointed out the chicks he would sleep with, how the campus had changed, etc. Pretty funny guy. Spilled beer all over my shoes, but that's okay. As far as family goes ... My grandfather helped start the Oceola Boy Scout camp with H. Roe Bartle (a civic leader here in KC in the late 40's I believe...for those not from KC). Appparently, they were very good friends. Bartle Hall here in KC and Roe Avenue are named after him. Too bad my grandfather never got a loan from the guy ... MM ~~As close as he'll get to greatness.

Postal, he still had the giant bodyguards when he came to the restroom--the primary reason Bob Dole even noticed it was him at the next urinal.
Standing there and the door opens, so Bob Dole turns to see who's coming in. Two giants step into the restroom, look around, then step back out. Bob Dole is thinking, "Strange..." when the door opens again and he comes strolling in. Bob Dole drank a couple of beers with Al Franken in an airport bar during the '96 campaign season. Pretty funny guy in a dry sort of way, and his head and hands are out of proportion with the rest of him. Bob Dole met Dizzy Gillespie in Joplin many moons ago. Even after talking to him, could never get the breathing thing right. Cool experience. Moved to Las Vegas and the one person Bob Dole knew was married to this woman that kept trying to fix Bob Dole up with a friend of hers. Relentless. Finally invited the lady and Bob Dole both over for dinner and we got along, so Bob Dole asks her if she'd like to go to dinner on Friday. She says she's already got dinner plans, but why doesn't Bob Dole come along as her date. So Bob Dole picks her up and follows directions to the All Star Cafe. Turns out our dinner date was with Andre Agassi and Brooke Shields. Pretty bizarre experience. Too many Chiefs and Royals to list after hanging out at the Levee during the Tim Grunhard Show days there and working celebrity golf tourneys that ARA Services co-sponsored. (Little Hatch Rules!) |

Brown Derby Liquor and the SMSU Sig Ep house. Ah...the memories. (Bob Dole preferred 905 Liquor though, because they has their own beer in long neck returnables and a case went for $6 plus deposit...)
Thanks for making Bob Dole remember happier days, Mark! |

A few years ago, I went out by myself to play a round of golf at Longview. It is very easy to get on a booked course if you are a single walk-on. This one particular day, the starter asked if I would mind playing with Fred Arbanas. He was already on the first tee and was playing alone. I said "sure that would be great". I got to play 18 holes with just him and me. He was a very nice guy, always telling me "nice shot, Bob" no matter how bad I hit the ball.
I am also possibly directly related to Judy Garland and Liza Minelli. Although we've never been able to confirm this. My Mom's grandfather was named Abraham Gumm. She has a lot of old pictures and stuff from this side of her family. Among some of the stuff she has are some old newspaper clippings about a local (Nebraska) singing group called the "Gumm Sisters". Well one of those sisters was Francis Gumm, who of course we all know better as Judy Garland.

seclark - I once "met" Bulldog Bob Brown, too. Only it wasn't under such pleasant circumstances. A friend of mine and I went to a wrestling card, got a little drunk, and were razzing the Bulldog pretty hard. Bulldog "won" his match, via a foreign object, and my friend sort of got in his way as he made his way up the aisle toward the back. Bulldog shoved my friend about six feet into the seats, then the cops came over to us and threw us out of the venue. We still laugh about that to this day.

Bob Dole--
Your welcome ... but I didn't even know that there were other liquor stores besides Derby in Spfld! Never heard of "905". Derby had Cooks beer ... $7 a case for returnable bottles. Nasty stuff, killer hangover. And the Sig Ep house got closed for a while. Seems the DEA and ATF stepped in and shut them down ... I was a TKE, so I can relate ... ;) MM ~~Glad to help Bob Dole with some recall.

Was an excellent cheap beer, IBDHO.
The Springfield stuff reminded Bob Dole that he also met Bob Barker and Graham Chapman while Bob Dole was at Drury. Got to hang out and shoot pool with Chapman for an evening. (He wasn't worth a crap at pool...) Met Bob Barker at some waste-of-time alumni function. He was a dick, but Bob Dole expected him to be since he was a d@mned Sigma Nu. (Hock, phtew) |

For the basketball fans out there...
I was about 15 years old and one of my best friends at the time had this kid from Gary, IN staying with him during the summer cause they played on the same AAU team...Got to know the kid pretty well, he is telling me these stories how IU, Illinois, Louisville, UK and so on were sending him letter and calling him already...We played a lot of ball together that summer, so I knew he was pretty decent considering he was a year younger than me...But IU, UK and you are only 14? Yeah, right.... A couple years pass and I see that some kid from Gary, IN is named Indiana Mr. Basketball....Couple more years pass and that same kid was the National College Player of the year...Another year passes and he is the 1st pick in the NBA Draft....A couple weeks ago he was playing on Sunday during the NBA ALL Star game wearing a Milwaukee Bucks #13 jersey... I probably should have believed him....And kept in better touch for that matter...

Bob Dole heard that the SMSU Sig Eps lost their charter for a couple of years, but never heard the details. Same thing had happened to the Drury Sig Eps prior to Bob Dole's arrival, and it had absolutely killed the fraternity. They couldn't accept any new pledges for 4 years, and by that time, who wants to join a frat with 3 active members? Pack of geeks that nobody else wanted to pledge by 1981, but they still had their annual Nickel Night party and we'd oblige them by trashing their house. (Bob Dole was a KA at Drury.)
Between Drury KAs, SMSU Sig Eps and the TKEs, Bob Dole managed to stay pretty liquored up. You guys had the best dance floor/party room Bob Dole visited at SMSU. |
