Musical Perspective Survey

I was having a conversation with a buddy last night about personalities and how they're related to music. It got me thinking and I ended up developing this survey because I thought it would be neat to see how the Music-niks here respond...

Here's the survey, along with my answers to get it started.

Favorite Album (1960's) - Pink Floyd, "Piper at the Gates of Dawn"
Favorite Band/Artist (1960's) - The Band of Gypsies (Jimi Hendrix)

Favorite Album (1970's) - David Bowie, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars"
Favorite Band/Artist (1970's) - Motorhead

Favorite Album (1980's) - Metallica, "Master of Puppets"
Favorite Band/Artist (1980's) - Joe Satriani

Favorite Album (1990's) - Monster Magnet, "Powertrip"
Favorite Band (1990's) - Radiohead

Favorite Album (2001-2005) - Queens of the Stone Age, "Songs for the Deaf"
Favorite Album of 2006 - Wolfmother, self-titled

Favorite Musical Decade - 1970's
Favorite Band (from that decade, not already listed) - Black Sabbath
Song the epitomizes your feelings on that decade - Ted Nugent, "Stranglehold"

As much as I like The Experience, I think the free-rolling "Electric Ladyland" is the quintessential Hendrix album. The stuff he did with the Band of Gypsies was just so much more expansive and, well, "out there".

Just out of curiousity, do you have a favorite Radiohead album? I can never choose one because they are so consistently good on each album.

Yeah, I didn't know where to put them, so I put them as my favorite band in the 80's, but I put Psycho Killer as my favorite song from the 70's. IIRC, they put out 3 albums in the 70's and 4 in the 80's.

Question about the survey:

Should this be the band/song that most influenced us at that time, or should this be the one we currently like the best? Also, for instance, I have the Grateful Dead from the 60s which was a huge influence on me in the 90s, but which I barefly even listen to anymore. It's a difficult survey for me because my tastes change constantly.

My personal favorite is "Kid A" but I would actually disagree with Phisherman.

Start with "Pablo Honey" and listen to all of their studio albums IN ORDER. Not only is every single one of them GREAT, but they are one of the few bands that you can actually HEAR them evolve from album to album.

That's a GREAT question that I hadn't actually considered. I guess the goal was to get an idea of a person's CURRENT perspective, so answer it as you would today rather than trying to recall your preferences at the time...

Excellent. I was worried I was going to have to profess my undying love for MC Hammer while in Junior High.

I'll have to think on this and post my list later.

Album (70's) - Alive, KISS
Artist (70's) - Van Halen

Album (80's) - GnR, Appetite for Destruction
Artist (80's) - GnR

Album (90's) - Teenage Fanclub, Bandwagonesque
Artist (90's) - Nirvana

Album (01-05) - X&Y, Coldplay

Album (06) - ??? Its not an 06 album, but i got it in 06 & its been on a nearly continuous loop ever since.... Coldplay X&Y.

Favorite decade - 90's

Fav band not listed from 90's - Pixies

Song for that decade - I'd Rather Be Missing You (than wishing you were gone) Coyote Shivers.

These kinds of lists are SO hard to do, they force you to leave out so many great bands that had a major impact on you.

I would call this list just a potential example of my tastes at any given time.

I am beginning to think Rush is the most maligned band of all time. I know you were joking, but this is the second time I have heard a slam on them today. The DJ introduced Tom Sawyer by saying "Here is the worst band ever from Canada." WTF is that all about, they don't say that shit about other bands.

I think my list would have surprised ya, but judging by the comments on here, you must have all the answers.
