Okay, forget the Staley thing for a minute.

Why are you opposed to drafting a DE?

After reading this thread, I'm guessing a meltdown happens, no matter what.

As for me, I would be disappointed with Staley, Ross, a TE or a RB. I'm not a big fan of any of the DTs that would be available there, either.

I am prepared to be disappointed.

I would be opposed to a DE because after the 4-6 games Allen is out we would have 3 DE's. (starting material) So we would have our 1st rounder rotate the last 10-12 games? I would rather draft a DT, WR, or OL. IMO even a CB would fill a bigger purpose as a nickle his first year and compete for starter the next than a guy only filling a spot for 4-6 games. Then for sure you know Allen is gone and we have no trade leverage if we pick a DE in the first. Now if I knew that Allen would be traded before he comes back from susp., then by all means, look at DE.

There's a good chance Allen misses more than 6 games and is gone after this season anyway. When Allen does play, there's no reason you couldn't have all 3 on the field, Hali plays off the line standing up (rather than in a 3-pt) many times a game.

Show me some proof that a "legit" draft site had Staley pegged as a 3rd rounder after this season.

That's a little hard to do, considering almost all of these draft sites change their content on a daily basis. Nonetheless, with a little ingenuity and the Google, here you go:

http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...c.php?t=198691

Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan. Staley, initially a third- or fourth-round prospect, showed his natural athleticism during a great on-campus workout. Look for him to go in the second half of the second round.

http://transcripts.usatoday.com/Chat...pt.aspx?c=1120

Rob Rang: Joe Thomas from Wisconsin and Levi Brown from Penn State are clearly the top two OTs in this draft. Thomas is unlikely to get out of the top 3. Brown could make it to the Texans, but because of the lack of depth at the position and his strong performance at the Senior Bowl, the Texans may have to consider moving up to guarantee his selection. The third tackle on our board at NFLDraftScout.com is Central Michigan's Joe Staley. Staley has great athleticism, but is significantly rawer than Thomas or Brown and should be a second-round pick.

I'll find some more...

Nice finds. I've been looking as well, but like you said, it's next to impossible considering these sites update content constantly.

I see what you are saying, but to use a 1 rounder for a worst case scenairo? There is also a chance he is only out 4-6 games and has a change of heart and signs long term with the Chiefs. Then what? Play a D thats good for 3 DE's? Eh, who knows, time will tell.

We've drafted the "right" guy two years in a row, making everybody happy. No way that happens again.

Yeah I agree.

Jared is a nutcase but he's also young and one of the top 5 DEs in the game. We'd better sign him to a long term deal and plan on him being on this team. He's our best defensive player.

That's gonna be hard to do considering that he's one transgression away from sitting out an entire season...

He probably won't be there when we pick in the FIRST.

Doesn't make him worth it.
