Yes, I agree. To me a musical would be a story that is told through the songs and where singing replaces dialogue. SNF and Footloose were both movies that were about dancing but I don't recall any of the characters singing to one another. The fact they spawned some popular songs doesn't make them musicals any more than, say, Top Gun.

I guess they would have been if it weren't for being so popular.

My wife's favorite movie ever is Grease. I don't get it, but she does. My daughter loves musicals. So does my mom. I'll let them keep musicals as long as I can have westerns.

I believe Grease is the only one where characters "break out in song". That one is a musical, the others are not.
