Leggett Chosen by Fellow Players as Chiefs' Rookie of the Year

Chiefs’ awards go to Gonzalez, Leggett

Quote:

Few things involving the Chiefs and their recently concluded 2-14 season could be more expected than tight end Tony Gonzalez being selected as their most valuable player.

Few things could be more of a surprise than the choice of cornerback Maurice Leggett as their rookie of the year.

The Chiefs on Monday announced the winners of their annual postseason awards. They were voted on by Chiefs players and the players will be honored at the annual 101 Banquet on March 7.

Gonzalez was one of the Chiefs’ few bright spots. He had one of the best seasons of his 12-year career, catching 96 passes for 1,058 yards and 10 touchdowns. Next month he will play in his 10th consecutive Pro Bowl game in Hawaii.

Despite that, Gonzalez had never before been selected as Chiefs MVP.
The Chiefs had four rookie starters this season in cornerbacks Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr, defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey and offensive tackle Branden Albert. But players opted for Leggett, who played mostly on special teams until becoming the third cornerback midway through the season.

Leggett scored a couple of touchdowns, recovering an Oakland fumble and returning it 67 yards in a November victory and intercepting a Denver pass and returning it 27 yards in a December defeat.

To Leggett’s teammates, those plays were apparently more important than steady play from Flowers and Carr and the promise of a bright future from Albert.
Wow. This D may be a pass rusher and a MLB away from turning things around. I know that sounds presumptuous, but with all these great young players, you'd think that pressure on the QB and a real sho 'nuff run stuffer at Mike Backer would make these young DBs really shine. They are sooooo green and yet most of us admit that they excelled in takeaways and are only in their first season. With better Safety play (ahem) and MLB play (ahem) and a Jared Allen-like DE, these young guys will just get better and better. No wonder Herm is so confident.

I think that between FA and the high draft picks (not to mention dealing LJ) this franchise may be able to pull in some key players that will tell the real value of these young studs as they learn the pro game and develop.

Congrats to Tony Gonzalez - WAY overdue award.

This is just plain weird.
Leggett wasn't even the second best Chiefs' rookie this season.

Flowers wasn't only the Chiefs best rookie player, but he was also their best defensive player this year. He got jobbed. By his own damn teammates no less...

Choosing Leggett simply proves this team is leaderless and clueless. If the chiefs were a ship they would be foundering. It's a joke. These players need to get their collective asses handed to them by a true coach and leader.

Jeez, it's a stupid award that the Chief's players obviously don't take seriously.

Some of you guys are taking this shit to the nipple. Flowers probably voted for legget. Flowers gets his props everywhere. Legget is a nobody. The team is just giving him his dues since he won't get any recognition anywhere else, not even on his own teams Fan's biggest BB.

Some of you pull negative statements out of your ass just to hate on these young players.

Get over it!

I'm guessing this is something of a locker room issue where one of the team leaders stood up and made a case for Leggett based on his hard play and good attitude coming from an UDFA.

I don't think it means that the players thought that Leggett made better on the field contributions than Flowers or Albert.

If you want to draw something positive from this it is that there was more than one rookie made significant positive contributions. And Dorsey could still develop. It has been a while since that has been the case.

Or you need to step away from the tard logic.

Yeah, I'll go with C).

Just be glad that there's actually more than one rookie who deserves the honor. This 2008 draft class will more than likely be both the best thing Carl and Herm ever did in the Millennium-Era Chiefs, as well as Herm's "parting-gift".

Considering that a departing gift from Herm should by all indication be a case of Turtle Wax and a copy of Madden 93'; I'm a grateful, grateful man.
