Panthers could franchise Peppers

Defensive end Julius Peppers let the Carolina Panthers know he is looking for a change of scenery.

"The front office has been informed of my desire to explore opportunities with other NFL teams following the expiration of my contract next month," Peppers said in a statement released by his agent Carl Carey. "At this point in my NFL career, I am seeking new challenges that will allow me to grow, develop and reach my personal potential on the football field.

"I strongly feel that making a move at this time is in my best interest. I appreciate the entire Panthers organization and am thankful for the seven seasons I've spent with the team."

The Panthers would have to pay Peppers, 28, nearly $17 million to franchise him for the 2009 season. Peppers has been in Carolina his entire career, seven seasons.

"Julius is firm in his decision that he needs a change," Carey said. "He feels that he can thrive in another system. While he has been selected to four Pro Bowls and designated as an All-Pro during his career, he feels that he has yet to develop to his full potential. This is the case of a great player who seeks to become an elite one."

Senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen contributed to this report.

Won't happen. Feel free to dream though.
understood ...... but unfortunately at some point the Chiefs are going to have to do something big to get the "stench of losing" out of the organization.

the longer they wait, they bigger the move they will have to make.

i won't get mad if they don't go after Peppers ..... long term signing him doesn't make sense, but this is as much about bringing confidence to the team as anything.

unless we get lucky and find a legit pass rusher in the later draft rounds, our defense is more or less gonna stink next year too. That hurts our young defensive backs and also puts additional pressure on any young quarterback we draft.

Get Peppers and/or Suggs and you'll see the defense go from worst to at least mediocre.

How would Suggs do in a 4-3? I wouldnt want him to be another Kendrell Bell failure because hes playing in the wrong system.

I'd give Peppers Jared Allen money before I gave Jared Jared Allen money. Peppers isn't a recovering, 17 year old alcoholic. He's just a football freak. Hell, he got Mario Williams drafted 1st overall in the NFL.

Love Julius Peppers.

But if the Chiefs decide to go 3-4, then you have to pass on JP and go with Terrell Suggs.

Dude's only 28. What team wouldn't love to have him?

The harder question is would this be the best use of resources? Not sure that it would be, especially given where the team is currently.

Carey, who first told ESPN.com of Peppers' decision early Saturday, said Peppers wants to play in a 3-4 defence. The Panthers use a 4-3 alignment.

"He certainly feels that he can excel and thrive in a 3-4 defence," Carey said. "He is also open to just another system in general that will allow him to maximize his athletic abilities."

If we had to "overpay" for one FA this off season, I would try to get Peppers. We have the money. As long as we don't go crazy with it for all of our signings, I think bringing Peppers in will be a key improvement for this team.

Yep. With Suggs a close second.

I know we've been burned before, with Chester McGlocktons and Shawn Barbers and Kendrell Bells and Sammy Knights and Pat Surtains and Ty Laws and Donnie Edwards Reduxes, but now we don't have Carl Peterson, and in all likelihood we'll have a different (read: competent) coaching staff. It's much less likely that Peppers or Suggs would flame out like seemingly every other defensive FA that has come through Kansas City in the past decade or so.

In this league you're never more than 3 years away from being that complete team.

Peppers and/or Haynesworth gets you a long way towards it. 2 good drafts and 1 or 2 FA signings can fill the QB, LB and OL needs on this team. FA can take care of the DL.

In 3 seasons he's 31 and we're ready to explode. That's still plenty of life in a rush end. Look at the Packers of the early 90s and you have your blueprint.

In. A. Heartbeat.
