Charles wants to take Larry's job
Despite what you may think, I approve of this. It is only GOOD for the team. Hopefully Larry doesn't throw a hissy fit.
PS - Shitty article, my god. http://www.panews.com/sports/local_s...l?start:int=15 This should work to Jamaal's benefit, as he has better hands and speed than the likes of Larry Johnson. Jamaal explained that Haley has given the impression that he knows what the second-year player is capable of. Charles said that Haley knows he can beat out Johnson for the starting position. So with that news, and his experiences from his rookie year, Jamaal went to work over the offseason. He's put on six pounds over the summer with a strict meal plan and workout routine. He said he lifts weights, eats, sleeps, runs (in that order) and then starts over. He does this three times a day. Before this regimen starts, he has breakfast. He also regularly gets in a late snack that includes an ocassional bowl of ice cream. "I'm eating full meals," Jamaal explained. "That's a big difference from what I've done in the past. "I'm mostly eating pasta and fish — nothing fried and nothing with a lot of fat. And I'm eating lots of rice — a lot of rice. "They want me at 208 (pounds). So I've been busting my butt. They want 208, I'm going to give them 208. I don't want to be any bigger, though. I'm at 207 right now and I'm going to get to 208 and stay there." Jamaal said the biggest lesson he learned from his first year was the work that he needs to put in. "I just thought I was working hard before the season started last year. But really, I was just happy to be there," he said. "I didn't work enough. I didn't want that to happen again so I've been busting my tail." About dueling for the starting spot with LJ, Charles said it is game on. "I like Larry," Jamaal said. "We are friends in the locker room. And I'm going to be a good teammate, but I plan to take it from him. I think my coaches realize they need me. They are going to have to give me that chance. I have fresher legs and our offense plays to my advantage. I think they are going to use me a lot like Marshall Faulk." Also this summer, along with spending time with family, Jamaal has joined up with former teammates such as James Johnson in 7-on-7 games against current Memorial players. He said it is important to him to return home and be apart of Memorial's program because no one really did that for him. Aside from new head coach Kenny Harrison, he said. Jamaal added that Harrison already has the Titans heading in the right direction. He explained that Port Arthur fans need to relax, be patient and eventually the right group of kids will come along. He said it takes a good group with the right talent to really get a program going. Charles will return to Kansas City this week. Camp starts on July 31. |
