USC contacting Herm Edwards

Sorry if repost and sorry Mecca if this happens.

Report: USC Contacts Herm About Job Opening
by Joel Thorman on Jan 11, 2010 8:46 AM CST 14 comments

Over the weekend, I passed along some rumors that had been floating around regarding the head coach opening at USC and Herm Edwards. A few folks thought the former Chiefs head coach would be a candidate at USC.

Today, those rumors are turning into reports.

Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News reports USC has contacted Herm regarding the job.

"USC also contacted former Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards, who was recommended by Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross, who previously worked under athletic director Mike Garrett at USC," the report says.

"Edwards might be the most controversial choice because of his primarily NFL background."

While I think Herm has the ability to walk into living rooms across the country and recruit the top high school athletes, I do wonder if he could still be successful doing everything the "right way". The perception of Herm is one who seemingly does things the "right way", and college football is a bend-the-rules job at times, so that would be one concern I would have.

Other NFLers interested include Jack Del Rio, currently head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher reportedly said he wasn't interested.

Herm appears on 810 WHB on Monday mornings so I'll see if he was asked about these reports

Herm was liked as a person but hated as a coach. Players did not like him cuz he came off as this rahrah guy who couldn't coach his way out of a paper sack. Its why he wanted so many rookies, they didn't know any better. This is from a friend on the Chiefs medical staff who got to hear all of them bitch.

Herm seems like decent guy, i wish him well. I wonder if race will come into play when trying to recruit players.

I missed this little gem:

"USC also contacted former Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards, who was recommended by Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross, who previously worked under athletic director Mike Garrett at USC," the report says.

So, I guess this means the same idiot who hired Greg ****ing Robinson as his head coach is now recommending Herman ****ing Edwards as a head coach for one of his cronies?

Wow.

Can somebody explain to me how these people remain employed?

Herm's personality will serve him well during the recruiting process but USC better get ready for a pretty undisciplined program with lots of off field distractions. Herm will destroy the offense if he doesn't hire a high profile OC and hand the playbook over.

The people lampooning Herm's ability in college don't get it, and never will.

I hope Herm is smart enough to make sure USC isn't going to get hard by the NCAA before he signs on the dotted line.

Quote:
More than three years after he left USC, running back Reggie Bush finally met with NCAA investigators looking into the question of whether his eligibility was compromised via the receipt of cash or other benefits while playing college football.

According to Jason Cole and Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports, the interview occurred prior to the 2009 NFL season.

Per the report, Bush denied receiving cash or other benefits from a prospective marketing agency while he was playing for the Trojans. The claims previously have resulted in a reported settlement with one of the principals of the agency, and a lawsuit filed by one of the other owners of the firm.

The problem is that the NCAA can't force Bush to talk -- and they have no ability to impose any consequences on him for failing to tell the truth. If the NCAA ultimately uncovers sufficient evidence to prove that the allegations are accurate, Bush could be required to pack his 2005 Heisman Trophy up in a box and send it to Nashville with a packing slip that reads "Vince Young."

The fact that the NCAA is still pushing the matter might have had something to do with coach Pete Carroll's decision to leave USC for the NFL, especially since Yahoo! Sports reports that the NCAA has broadened its probe of the Trojans' athletics department in the past year.

With Carroll possibly in line for a black eye once the NCAA issues a notice of infractions, which according to Yahoo! Sports could come as soon as March, it arguably makes sense for Carroll to escape now.
