A sick Tebow meets with Chiefs, Vikings and Panthers

A sick Tebow meets with Chiefs, Vikings and Panthers

Former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has met at length with representatives from the Kansas City Chiefs, Minnesota Vikings and Carolina Panthers, according to members of Tebow’s camp.

Tebow is working out this week in Mobile, Ala., as part of the Senior Bowl.

The meeting with Carolina was the most formal, a sit-down session with the coaching staff. New Chiefs offensive coordinator Charlie Weis also sat down with Tebow.

All three teams could be looking for a quarterback in the 2010 NFL draft. Minnesota might be without Brett Favre, and Jake Delhomme’s time at Carolina is dwindling.

Tebow battled a 103.5-degree fever last night and has been sick with strep throat since Saturday, brother Robby said. He’s been on IV the last two days and sweated through the entire night on Monday.

His performance Tuesday wasn’t flawless, but it was an improvement over Monday’s fumble-plagued day. Tebow dropped one under-center snap compared to numerous drops the previous day.

Tebow, who wasn’t available for post-practice interviews other than a few comments on the run, threw some nice deep passes Tuesday, connecting with Ole Miss’ Dexter McCluster and Florida’s Riley Cooper 50 yards downfield. The intermediate throws got him in trouble. At least two passes were close to being picked off during 11-on-11 drills.

Tebow said he’s pleased with his day and “just getting used to things a little bit more” before being whisked away by Senior Bowl officials.

LOL it was probably Scott Wright who said Tebow looked a bit like Steve Young in high school where he actually did take center snaps but that changed in his 4 years of college.

It isn't even the system that's the problem. I just don't think he can make the throws.

But they both have that same ability to get teams into the winners circle.

Now I am not at all saying we should draft this dude. But if the final product turns out to be anything remotely close to what Steve Young turned out being... after a slow start in Tampa Bay IIRC, then we should probably at least have a conversation with him while in Mobile.
It probably was Michael Lombardi and I was about to post his article. Good timing.

Quote:
Tebow is no different than Hall of Famer Steve Young, who left BYU and went to the USFL. Young was known as a runner first; he couldn’t read coverages, and it was felt he would struggle in a pro system. He went to the Bucs and failed to become integrated into their offense. He was literally given to the 49ers in a trade. The Bucs were convinced, as all of America and most of the 49ers organization were, that Young was never going to be a pro-style passer.

When coach Bill Walsh asked his staff if they were in favor of making the trade for Young, there were no yes votes. I kid you not. Today, there will be revisionist history, but I was in the room, and Walsh had little support for making the trade other than his own instincts and vision for Young. This is what made Walsh brilliant. He was not hoping for Young to be a good player, he had a plan to make Young a good player. He saw the path and couldn’t have cared less if anyone else saw it. He was never afraid to stand alone in his opinions.

Tebow might not be as fast as Young, but he is more powerful, and although they had different styles, both were effective runners. The style of offense from BYU to Florida is vastly different, but both men were looking to run with the ball. Young was viewed as a runner, not a quarterback.

He was a failure in Tampa because they tried to fit him into their offense, not develop an offense around him. Tebow will be a success if he goes to a team that has a head coach who has a vision for him and, most important, a plan for his success.

I don't think it was Scott Wright. Not exactly sure what program I was listening to. Sort of blew it off up until reading this thread headline.

I don't care that Tebow runs or would have to learn that or even that he has to learn center snaps, stuff like that can actually be taught. It's his really elongated throwing motion that is a huge problem. It's very hard to teach someone to throw differently then they have been for their whole lives.

Tebow has that windup motion kind of like Leftwhich just with a far worse arm.

His future is probably as a gimmick player, he'd be good as a goalline wildcat back.

Well Young replaced a future HOF qb with multiple SB rings. And if Tebow came to KC, he'd be replacing a future HOF qb with multiple SB rings........wait......um...........nevermind.

Stop this "trade" talk immediately.

The Chiefs could have taken Sanchez and traded him last year - OH WAIT NO THEY COULDN'T HAVE BECAUSE THAT NEVER WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IN A MILLION YEARS.

It's not gonna happen with Tebow.

NFL scouts weighing pros and cons on Tim Tebow

MOBILE, Ala. - There are reservations among NFL people about Tim Tebow's mechanics, delivery and ability to read defenses.

His leadership, work ethic and competitiveness are unquestionable.

Whether the former Florida quarterback hears his name called on Thursday, April 22, in the first round of the NFL Draft or has to wait might depend on whether Tebow's intangibles outweigh concerns about his ability.

"He's a tremendous competitor. He may be No. 1 in the country at that," Jaguars general manager Gene Smith said. "Certainly, he's learning as a quarterback. I think people have got to give him credit. This guy has been a tremendous leader and has competed in as good a conference as there is in college football.

"It's a good question. I feel character counts, and so from an intangible aspect, the one guy who has to have the most of that is the quarterback. You've got the head coach. You've got the quarterback. The two faces of your franchise. I think he's definitely shown that's one thing he has for any of the 32 teams in the league."

Intangibles - things like leadership, work ethic, dedication, toughness, winning - are things that a player has or doesn't. They can't be taught, and they certainly can't be faked. For an example, compare JaMarcus Russell and Peyton Manning.

Russell has the size and arm strength that NFL people love - but he has struggled to read NFL defenses, has completed just 52.1 percent of his passes for 4,083 yards with 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions and won just nine of 31 games in his three-year career in Oakland.

He has lost the respect of his coach and teammates, and there are questions about his work ethic and dedication.

Manning also has a strong arm and good size, but he's clearly not as athletic as Russell. He's also a film-room junkie, a workaholic, a fiery leader and a fierce competitor. He has won four MVPs and one Super Bowl and will play in another Super Bowl on Feb. 7.

The equation - at least for Gil Brandt, who spent 29 years as the Dallas Cowboys' vice president of player personnel - is pretty clear. Talent alone gives you Russell. Talent plus intangibles gives you Manning. Which quarterback would you rather have, Brandt asked.

"We can criticize [Tebow] for whatever we want, but the bottom line is he wins, and the bottom line is he's a workaholic," said Brandt, who now works for NFL.com. "We criticize the Raiders' quarterback right now by saying he's got all the tools he needs to be successful, but he has poor work habits. Whatever business you're in, or even if you're a student, you might not have the God-given talents [of others], but if you work at it, you're going to be pretty good.

"... Now when you evaluate Peyton Manning he has some stiffness in him. And yet what this guy has done is totally unbelievable. The stiffness you can say is a liability, but his stiffness is overcome by his mental [approach] and his ability to outwork people. ... This guy might not be the most flexible guy in the world, but he knows how and where to put the ball to win. Those are things you have to consider."

The biggest might be Tebow's track record as a proven winner. He won a state title at Nease High School and guided Florida to the 2008 BCS national title. He went 35-6 in three seasons as the starter, including winning 16 of his last 18 games against Southeastern Conference opponents.

And winning - not tight spirals and gaudy stats - is really all that matters, right?

"I'll help you answer that question," Florida coach Urban Meyer said. "He's a winner, and unless the job description changes at some other level of football, he's a winner, and he'll win at the next level, too."

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock projects Tebow as a third-round draft pick, but he said Tebow might rise into the first round once teams interview him and see his intangible qualities firsthand this week in Senior Bowl practice.

Regardless of where Tebow is drafted, Mayock said he has to get on the field somehow in 2010.

"The way I look at this kid is I want the ball in his hands," Mayock said. "And whether it's at wildcat, whether he's in motion as an H-back and catching the football, I really don't care but I want the ball in his hands, because the kid's a winner."

And the questions about his delivery, release and mechanics? Tebow said he will work fanatically to fix whatever flaws he might have.

"I will do whatever the coaches ask me, anytime, any place, anywhere," he said.

From that standpoint, he compares to the quarterbacks who will be battling in the Super Bowl on Feb. 7, Smith said.

"He has the mind-set of Peyton Manning and Drew Brees from a preparation standpoint," Smith said. "So that's what I'm seeing from honing his skills. He'll put in the time. Now, how good he becomes, I don't know. I don't have a crystal ball. I do know he's a tremendous competitor [who] has played quarterback in a program [that has] won national championships. He's certainly shown the ability to lead. That's probably the No. 1 thing you have to have in a quarterback."

If we're looking for a quarterback, we shouldn't be looking at Tebow.

Maybe we aren't looking at a QB since we have Cassel and Croyle. Hell maybe our staff thinks highly of Gurentwhatever. He went to the same college as Brady, he has good size, and he has a hell of an arm(not like Croyle, but better than Cassel) and downfield accuracy.
