Didnt Gunther switch the defense back in the day from the 3-4 to a 4-3?

I wonder how much more dominant DT would have been if he had continued to be a 3-4 OLB...iirc he had 20+ sacks in his last year in a 3-4 and his best year after that was 14.5...I may be off by a year or something, I was only like 12

This x1000.

I was a huge Gunther fan all the way up until 2008. Last straw.

And the fact the Lions were 32nd on defense last year and 25th this year just further proves he's a big fraud.

He started to lose me when he basically threw Vermeil under the bus... despite the fact Vermeil let him get pretty much whatever he wanted. But I'm admittedly a Vermeil homer, I know.

But then he really topped it off when he spent all these years preaching up Herm, saying he's always coached the Cover 2, this was going to be great. Then 5 seconds after he left, he whined that he was handcuffed for 3 years by having to coach Cover 2. What a bunch of crap. For all their flaws, Herm or Vermeil would never do something like that. I have no respect for anyone that handles their business that way.

Gunther didnt coach up a single player in his time in KC

not one

He DID have a propensity to play players out of their position though.

Warfield and Bartee should have never been corners
Dorsey should have been a 3 technique
Kendrell Bell as a 4-3 OLB? Really?

Im not sure what the **** people liked about that guy.

I think it had a LOT less to do with these guys.

A LOT more to do with Marty.

Marty has coached a world class defense every place he's been. Gunther has coached a piece of shit defense under every head coach not named Marty Schottenheimer.

Case closed.

A head coach's conversation with Gunther Cunningham about defensive strategy on 3-1 with the game on the line:

Coach: Okay Gun, it's 3-1 with 1:30 left, I'll assume they're gonna run it to get the first down, who should we have stacking the line? Then who controls the perimeter in case of a fake?

Gun: WHAT IS ALL THAT NONSENSE YOU'RE TALKIN ABOUT?! WE GOTTA BLITZ THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF THOSE FOOLS! GET EVERY ONE OF THEM ON THE GROUND!

Coach: Uhh, are you sure an all out blitz is really necessary? I mean, it's 3-1. If we blitz, they could audible and throw a simple screen and it could go all the way. Are you sure about this?

Gun: ARE YOU SAYING I'M A PANZY BOY LIVING IN NAMBY PAMBY LAND?! BLITZ THE HELL OUT OF THEM!

Coach: It's your call Gun, send in the blitz call to the captain!

Defensive captain: Oh jesus christ Gunther, another damn blitz....../facepalm

Wow, that was a lot funner than I thought it'd be.

Wow, well said. I cant disagree with any of that.

I think people who like Gunther are just nostalgic for the good times of the mid 90's.

he lost me around 2006 when we his defense's failed time and time and time again...missed the playoffs because of his defenses.

I honestly dont know how the guy keeps a job. He hasnt done anything of note in 13 years.

Yeah he sure didn't turn Jared Allen into one of the best pass rushers in the game.

We just didn't have shit to work with while Gun was here his 2nd time around.

And partially of that is his fault, as he had some say as to what players he wanted on defense.

Sammy Knight was old and slow, so was Surtain, and Ty Law, Bell was a ILB in a 34 defense trying to make a change to SLB in a 43 when everyone KNEW he was horrible in coverage. Our interior DL sucked with a bunch of failed DV draft picks and horrible veteran castoffs. It's hard to turn that kind of bad, into some good. I will blame him for the misuses of some players, DJ, Mitchell (should have played WLB), Fujita. The only bright spot was Jared Allen. Dumbasses on here will complain he only showed up for half of a game....well most of the time DE's lose their battles anyway. He was good enough for a trip to Hawaii and his bus ticket out of town to another team that was willing to give him big money.

I just can't blame Gunther for everything that was wrong on this defense while he was here. Some of his players are shining now. And I can't think of any coach that can field a good defense without at least SOME talent. We just didn't have any.
