NFL Insider:"This will be Todd's last year, and I think he knows it"

The following quotes are from NFL scouts, coaches and front-office personnel, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

"(Chiefs head coach) Todd Haley knows his team stinks, that he is going to get blamed and it probably is his fault. He definitely has done nothing to help the offense, especially at the receiver position. It's not difficult for anyone to connect the dots. Look at the guys they have brought in (during Haley's tenure) — Jerheme Urban, Terrance Copper, Steve Breaston, Bobby Wade — they all played for Todd at Arizona, Dallas or Chicago. (Rookie first-round pick Jonathan) Baldwin is already in trouble. You look at the offense as a whole. They have no center; the receivers are not that good; (Tony) Moeaki is hurt again, the right tackle (Barry Richardson) cannot block speed. Subtract Charlie Weis — how does the offense get any better? This will be Todd's last year, and I think he knows it."

I've never been a Haley fan, and I believe last year he got the benefit of the weakest schedule in the league, no injuries and several players having career/last gasp years. The offense this season looks absolutely befuddled, and the defense is tame. These guys looked impotent against Tampa and St Louis, for god's sake.

Haley's problem is a total lack of respect of the need for quality linemen, demonstrated by the release of Brian Waters. I think Brian Schottenheimer and his respect for the accomplishments of Ferguson and Mangold, and the time they gave young Sanchez to learn the game, is a quality the Chiefs could use right now. People can say what they will, but 9 playoff appearance in 11 seasons looks really good right now, and this team just might need another Schottenheimer to get there.

Great insight. What a well thoughtout post. Clearly this boards has been lacking this kind of wisdom and expertise so we are extremely fortunate to have you as a new member of CP.. In all fairness you have set the bar pretty high for your first post so good luck and I see much red in your future.

I think losing Weis may hurt us more than we think. He knew Cassel's limitations and game planned and called plays accordingly.

Haley is more stubborn and aggressive, and he's going to expect Cassel to take the next step, so he's not going to hold anything back.

Blocking will be hurt by this as well. Weis did a good job calling quicker passing plays, so we didn't have to worry about pass protection as much.

Haley likes deeper, slower developing routes like digs and deep crossing routes. Like in the Rams game for instance, we came out with play action on the first 2 plays, and tried to go downfield...with bad results. Cassel couldn't hit Bowe in time, and pass protection broke down.

The offense could get off to a slow start.

Every coach in the league pretty much knows this could be their last year. This is a win now league these days. I think Haley getting this team to the playoffs last years keeps him alive unless we go to 4-12 or worse. Pretty clearly things are not looking good right now, but I've never heard of a coach fired for looking like crap in preseason. I heard people calling for Raheem Morris' job during his first season there. I think he changed a few minds there.

I would say Cassel is the person that is on the hotseat for his job. Despite a solid year, his play in the playoffs and big games left something to be desired. He needs to show he is more than a game manager.
