What I Saw

There isn’t a way to quantify a loss like that. There isn’t a way to describe it someone, even if they saw it. There is only the experience of having your guts ripped out.

It feels like a fugue state. The sides of your vision get fuzzy, footsteps and breaths feel artificial, forced.

It’s easier to blame particular whipping boys, but I think that is a half-assed analysis.

Here’s what I saw:

I saw an opposing QB sandwich three interceptions around play that is as good as I’ve ever seen from any quarterback. Andrew Luck was absolutely brilliant. That wasn’t just great quarterbacking, it was all-time pantheon quarterbacking.

I saw a wide receiver we didn’t have an answer for, regardless of which corners were in or out of the game.

I saw an artificial surface that should be nuked from orbit. Head injuries on incidental contact like that is somewhat of an aberration, but that many should not happen. I wonder if they replaced the rubber filling with tungsten before the game.

I saw a defense that made a number of excellent plays yet was completely eviscerated. It’s hard to put it all on the D when they gave the offense 17 points via turnovers and won the battle 4-1

I saw an offense score 27 points on its own, and convert another 17 points via turnovers, without its best player for the entirety of the game.

I saw a rookie RB with ball security issues play his ass off as a worthy replacement for our best player.

I saw a quarterback whom many, myself included, derided as a game manager play at a level that no Chiefs QB has in the playoffs in my lifetime. Alex Smith was absolutely magnificent in that game. He did not deserve that loss. He beats almost any QB in history on any day except that QB on that day.

I saw a wide receiver, who is the second best in franchise history and who gets crapped on like he’s Jonny Morton, play a brilliant game.

I saw a free safety who shouldn’t start in the UFL commit the cardinal sin of playing that position.

I saw a head coach whose biggest knack was time management and whose offense was built upon efficiency waste all of its timeouts on offense which turned a 4th and 11 into a 4th and the season.

I saw a head coach go for a field goal at the one yard line when every statistical metric says you go for it. Had they converted, the Chiefs would have won the game. Had they not, they still would have had a chance to win that they had at the game’s end.

But what I didn’t see makes me feel just as shitty.

I feel bad for Jamaal, Bowe, Smith, Hali, and others, but I feel terrible for fans that had to experience that.

Sorry milkman, Reaper, OTW, ChiefsCountry, Flopnuts, Rainman, Bob Dole, and countless hundreds of others that populate this site. You didn’t deserve that experience.

I feel like the football antichrist dragged his carcass from the bowels of Hell to smite us one more time.

^ We've seen this enough the past few games that we've either got to get new guys back there or a better scheme.

If you blitz you're going to have to play Cover 1 or Cover 0. Surely you saw what happened on the Colts' final offensive play, and that wasn't the only time it occurred.

The safeties are just not good enough for the Chiefs to blitz. Unless they get preposterous pressure from the base front they are going to get torn up.

Very true. Smith was great except for that ****ing intentional grounding. He throws that to his left out of bounds and there's no flag.

For the turf, I don't think they have astro turf with concrete under it but I know it was an issue when I was in high school. We need two new CBs (sorry Brandon) and a new FS. Help inside at LB wouldn't hurt either.

I hate to say it but Tamba's looking older and older. He only gets sacks on "long sacks." We need quick sacks.

Houston going down blows.

Jamaal, **** man, that is terrible. He would probably play next week if we'd won.

Honestly, I don't even care about the loss of the timeout. It didn't affect the game. Having it might have gotten us 1 throw.

Biggest thing for us is that we didn't get to return the freaking ball. Our D couldn't stop them so we didn't get a punt or kick return. That gives us that extra 14 yards every drive. I think our best starting field position off of a kick was around the 28.

While true, there were moments where he was brilliant in the pocket. His awareness was fantastic and knew exactly when to run with it. The defense had success in the first half because of the pressure. Once he realized he'd have to do some maneuvering through the pocket, he put on a show.

Honestly, the lack of interior pass rush was one of the killers today. Someone's gotta force Luck's hand.

Thanks Hamas. I repped you, but literally, im sick to my stomach. I am a chiefs fan. I love this team. I really do. I feel like I have been hammered with a sledge hammer in my gut.

I knew when Alex threw that last pass to Bowe, and it dropped into his arms, that all was good.

Just sick. Thanks for the perspective post.

I agree with everything.

He also evaded a shit-ton of pressure in the first half and was throwing darts all over the field for much of the game, despite rarely having a clean pocket, the best RB in the NFL, his #2 WR, and at the end, his #2 RB.

I saw a very dangerous team prove that it has the kind of quarterback that can win a game like this. That should be something of a relief to you guys.

The outcome was crazy brutal, though. Chins up, guys. Most of the Chiefs have nothing to be ashamed of and their fans have good cause for hope.

I agree....Smith has gotten better as the year has gone along, and I am excited to see the offense next year, with Smith having a full off season to continue to study and grow in the offense.

The offense still needs a WR, but I think the secondary has to be the top priority in the off season.

Shrugs. I chalked it up to how much really did Cyrus Gray spend running that route in practice with Alex? Probably very little.

That's what hurts when you lose your two primary rbs.
