If your boss is smart at all, he'll never say anything about you telling. He can't fire a person based on that information. But if you tell him, he'll be able to start watching, and that'll give him what he needs to fire the guy. And the guy really should be fired. He's stealing.

stealing 20 dollar items?
wouldn't the inventory be way off or your cash register be short by the end of the night? How do you cover it up exactly? |

One thing to consider.....
How long has this been going on now? If you tell your boss outright....he might question as to why you didn't tell him the first time it happened? If it's been a while...you might want to think about putting an "anonymous" tip in. |

Nope, I'd be honest. Say you know it's been going on, you told him to knock it off, you felt bad for his wife and kids but he won't stop, that's why you didn't report it right away. I think they'll understand that. And as someone else said, they can't fire him just based on what you say. They'll have to let him know somehow that they are watching the inventory, and the gravy train is over.

Tell the owner. The owner could then have a meeting with everyone concerning inventory discrepancies . The owner can inform everyone that they are being watched. Maybe the problem will solve itself.

When I worked at Toys R' Us while I was in college....there were multiple employees that would steal video games all the time. The manager and owner didn't inform everyone that they were being watched. They didn't say shit. Nobody knew anything until a good majority of them got busted.

One time when I was working for Airborne Express, a case of Nintendo Gamecubes came through the line and I caught my supervisor stealing it.
To keep my mouth shut, he gave me one... I was fired soon after for no reason. I'm pretty sure he told the "big boss" it was me who stole the case. ****ing prick.... but this ended up being one of the best things that happened to me because I landed a great job a month later that propelled my career in the field I wanted to be in. Moral of the story? No ****ing clue. |

This kinda reminds me of a time when I was like 16 or 17 working for Montgomery wards.
There was a coworker that I saw stealing a couple times and he would always use the same computer to ring up his sales and was kind of a jerk about it being his computer. One day, I took about 10 of those sticky little security tags upside down by his computer on the floor sticky side up. When he was leaving the store at closing, the alarm went off and security was always by the door at closing for this exact kind of thing. He was asked to take his wallet and keys out of his pockets and was asked if he had purchased anything and forgot to disable the security tags. As he was pulling his wallet out, a bunch of jewelry fell out of his pocket that he had stolen that day and he had the wards card numbers of at least 5 customers written down, too. I told the girl that headed up loss prevention that I had put those security tags by his computer and they gave me a bonus check (even though I didn't technically tell them he stole anything, they still gave me the bonus) for 500 iirc the next day. |
