Randy Gregory Fails Drug Test

Gregory failed his drug test at the combine for pot. His dad opened the letter sent to his home address and had to tell his son.

How far does he drop now?

The NFL, like most of society, should be turning against condemning marijuana use sooner than later.

I'm not shitting my pants over it. Bring the guy aboard.

I think we're going to find out how far we've come with Gregory and DGB.

And I'm not going to pass on a premium athlete out of fear that it won't.
You and I may not give a shit and yes society and all should move on. But that is not the situation.
The situation is that if he continues on his path he will be getting suspended and missing a lot of time while having a fully guaranteed contract.

I think D is missing the point. The point isn't that he smoked pot - it's that he did so even knowing that there is a drug test coming and that it could cost him millions of dollars. The NFL isn't going to stop drug testing in the near future and you can't afford to invest a lot in a player that may piss away his career for a toke.

That said, he is a top tier pass-rushing talent, and you have to at least think about investing in him if you think you can keep him clean. If he is a full-blown addict, however, you must pass. You can't sit here and bank on the NFL turning a blind-eye to marijuana usage in the near-future. It is not even on the table for discussion yet.

Pot doesn't matter but there is a certain lack of discipline and stupidity that are the real issues.

He knew he was going to get tested so was he just dumb or is it a problem where he just can't stop?

Look at his history he was one strike away from being removed from his college team. His history with weed starts in HS as he admits.
The broadcaster in the video in the link states that some in Nebraska have said once he gets paid he will fall off.

Counterpoint: Most kids don't honestly know how long MJ stays in your system and how long you have to be off of it to pass a test. If you are a heavy user, it is shocking to some people how long it takes, it can sometimes take over 6 months.

Its probably not a matter of "He knew he had to stop by X date, and he just couldn't because he's an immature idiot", he likely stopped a few weeks before, figured that would be enough, and was wrong. Once you are drafted, get an agent, a team, etc, you'll get all the info you need on that sort of thing.

Failed Marijuana tests should have zero impact on a team's internal grade of a player. Its fine to recognize that other teams might overreact and strategically take advantage of a predicted draft stock drop, but the team shouldn't internally downgrade their assessment of a player.

This is the possible issue, not marijuana.

maturity
intelligence
discipline
addiction

which combination of the above would lead him to be dirty at the combine?

It's an issue.

You are saying that the fact that the NFL will suspend your player if you can't keep him clean shouldn't be a factor in the decision to invest draft resources into said player?

There's no way he'd slip past the Patriots at the back of the round.

If you can get him in the late 1st, your guaranteed money isn't even that high and you'd have the right to the 5th year player option on there as well so if he did excel, you'd have him cheap for a long time.

Honestly, if he fell past the Chiefs I'd be pissed. The guy is probably the most talented pure pass-rusher in the draft and it's a draft that's absolutely loaded at the position. It's like being the most talented QB in the '83 draft class. Oh sure, somebody's probably going to draw a Blackledge but if you can get Marino and take your chances, you do so.

What I am saying is once he knows what it takes to pass a test, then he'll do what it takes to pass a test. Most kids honestly don't know, and they are winging it with bad info they got from a buddy.

I call bullshit on that if you're talking doing a UA. A hair follicle test, now that is a different story.
