"Is Having Alex Smith the Worst Purgatory in Football?"--Dan LeBatard

He mentioned it a few times on his radio show today. The quotes in reference is from the top of the second hour. in full:

"What is the worst purgatory in football? Is it Alex Smith, where you're going to be OK, and hugely boring, and never win anything, or is it the whole Philip Rivers situation of always being down late and having to go the whole length of the field?"

"It's not Hell; it's Purgatory. You're OK, but you're not good enough and you're not going to be good enough."

"You're not going to do any sort of meaningful winning with Alex Smith as your QB. Nothing."

"It's hard to watch when you watch what they were playing against and he's, 'all I wanna do is not turn the ball over, all I wanna do is it's 3rd and 9 and I'll throw it three yards, or I'll take a sack.'"

"You'll get to the playoffs, and you'll lose."

Yeah, I'm pointlessly dreaming

My patience is at an end though, I dont wanna limpdick my way to a wildcard

I doubt they get even a wildcard, It'll be hard to get more than 7 wins.

We have one of the worst passing games in the NFL and what is shaping up to be one of the worst pass defenses.

Should be a great combo.

Wait. You said it was LeBatard. Where is the bullshit about the anthem/Kaepernick/BLM/racism schtick?

Really though, I don't give a ****. I'll stay in purgatory after climbing out the depths of hell thanks to Squirmin Herman Mother****ing Sack of **** Edwards and Scott Franchise Killer Pioli. **** man.

We aren't winning shit for awhile anyway. We don't consistently beat good teams so until we can do that, what's the ****ing point of worrying about who is taking the snaps?

Between the Tire Fire days of Squirmin Herman Mother****ing Sack of **** Edwards and Scott Franchise Killer Pioli, and then right the **** after that the CTE bullshit starts and they pull half our starters out because of "concussions" when we are raping some fools in the playoffs, to Donks becoming cheap shot artists and Von Douche not getting fined for obviously teeing off on Smith. Late. With the Crown. Launching. While a week later Tampa gets one for a fat OL sitting on him. Then through the whole London home game crap. All the way through to the tampering shit, Sean Smiths ridiculous suspension. Then these mother****ers like Richard Sherman says his knees hurt while I climb on the tractor with arthritis in my knees ankles and hands but don't happen to have any $20M checks laying around. I'm just ****ing tired man. What the **** am I rooting for? It used to be football. Now it's ****ing asenine PR driven nonsense that has only an ancillary correlation to football.

Maybe I'm grumpy after working a billion hours to get $3 corn harvested and $2.80 wheat planted, but I'm ****ing tired of ****ing nonsense.

He's not an elite QB....never was and never will be.

He's a game manager.

It's a combination of him and Reid. Doug Pederson left and is in Philly kicking ass w/ a rookie QB. Alex Smith is a 11yr NFL veteran QB with an average ceiling who's started just about every season of his career. You won't find many other QB's with more starting experience than Smith. The ones who have just as much or more starting experience you could argue are better than Smith.

Brady
Roethlisberger
Rivers
E.Manning
Rodgers
(.....even a healthy Tony Romo)

4 out of the 6 QB's listed above are SB winning QB's, and you can argue the other 2 are still better than AS.

Smith isn't going to throw any passes longer than 15-20yrs. That's a problem. I dont know if it's Reid not trusting Smith to go deep, or if Smith doesn't have the balls to, or if Reid has such tunnel vision that those plays don't even get called or if it's a lethal combination of everything. But it's a huge ****in' problem. Something has to change.

But one thing's for sure. Reid's not giving the playcalling duties to anyone else and there's no way in hell Alex Smith is being benched.

Smith would not be on the field, if he refuses to throw deep passes that Reid wants. I don't know why people can't get this.

Half the shit Reid calls are designed quick hitting short passes.

So we have to figure one of two things.

1. Alex can't make the deeper throws and multi-reads.. so his coach is masking his flaws.
( could anyone really believe a HC would pay and play a QB like this?)

2. Andy once again sees a bottom tier OL, and feels he has to get the ball out quick or they are screwed.

This yr, it also feels clear that Reid is terrified of Alex getting hurt. (both in quick pass calls no matter what... AND that Smith is no longer using his legs much)

Alex Smith is not a special QB that can carry a brokedicked or group of screwups. Few teams have one.

Be honest, everyone.. this team has been loaded with people screwing up way too much so far.. everyone including Smith. It's as if they huddle up and ask, "okay, which of us will royally fail our assignment this play?"

... but people here are like children. I can't tell if you all just love the drama? or if you are really panicked and miserable like this IRL. It's a pathetic display of fans on a team that has more wins in 4 games this yr than they had in 6 games last yr.

Smith has not been good.. but once again, when the whole team is loaded with fail... why do fans expect this mythical, epic QB to come in and carry them? It's rare... RARE... and it's not Alex ****ing Smith.

Alex Smith is the worst QB in the NFL that you'd be OK with as your team's starter. He's never going to be Aaron Rodgers or Cam Newton or Ben Roethlisberger but he's also not going to be Tyrod Taylor or Case Keenum or Blake Bortles or Blaine Gabbert who will be on teams that are contiunally looking for a new QB.
