I haven't reffed since the early 90s, but back then I took FIFA certified courses regularly. Then we were instructed to stop the clock on injuries and substitutions, but keep the clock status to ourselves.

Some jurisdictions key in on the point that there is no reference in the FIFA rules allowing the clock to stop, but there is [was] concomitantly nothing in the rules disallowing clock stoppage solely at the referee's discretion.

That said, we weren't required to follow that suggestion [again, the point was ref's discretion, more than anything], and some didn't out of fear of forgetting to restart the clock on stoppage. Seemed like 6 of one 1/2 dozen of another, because if you're gonna forget to restart the clock, you're gonna lose track of how much stoppage time has accrued.

Just got back from the pub. Incredible atmosphere.

First of all, great result. We desperately needed to escape with a point and we did. Job well done. Here are my thoughts:

1. The biggest thing to me was that we looked like we had every right in the world to be on the same field as England. We were not overmatched, IMO.

2. Donovan, Dempsey, and Altidore routinely looked dangerous. That was very encouraging for the remainder of the tournament.

3. Bradley was SOLID in the midfield. He held the ball well, dispossessed the ball well, and was quickly springing counterattacks with his passing.

4. Gooch went into beast mode in the second half.

5. TIMMAAAAY was world class!!!!!!
seriously, this thread is full people who don't like soccer complaining about soccer...hows about you baseball fans (o so exciting!) beat it...we're rooting for our ****ing Country

re: the game

couldn't stop thinking about this team with Davies.....we'd of won today

we shit our pants for about 5 mins, after that we were solid....England had more chances, but we just need a striker that instills fear..that was Davies...

six inches to the right and Altidore's shot goes in

1-1 is a good result...they should feel like they can play even better...

For those of you who went to pubs, did you get a chance to see some British tears? Pics?

I noticed the broadcast never went back to the live feed in Manchester again after England's goal.

Goal reaction, then nothing for the next hour and a half.

I would have loved to see the reaction of that crowd on Buckner - er, Green's gift.

Me, too. They probably were so sad that gallons of Capri Sun were poured on the graves of loved ones as a form of libations to the soccer gods.

Whoever instructed your courses told you wrong then. FIFA has always used a running clock.

Watched it at an Irish pub in Spain. ****ing incredible. Plenty of shit from the English fans ("you've only got one song" got sung quite a bit), but watching them walk out in silence was brilliant. So glad we were able to grab the draw.

Worth noting.

For the 2006 opener we also went down a goal early to an opponent that was supposedly superior. Reflecting on that day, I remember the team looking absolutely overwhelmed after conceding the goal. As you will remember, they allowed a second goal and bowed out. However, this team did not tuck their tail between their legs after Gerrard's goal today. They stayed calm and stuck to the game plan. This is a much different team.

I'll be interested to see how the Algeria v Slovenia match goes tomorrow.

Okay, so I feel like everyone is forgetting that after we allowed the goal, we pretty much DOMINATED the first half. England dominated the last part of the second half, as we were obviously playing for a draw.

Both teams had chances to score again, neither capitalized.

Talked with a bunch of England fans during the game and afterward, and they pretty much all said "You know, you Yanks aren't nearly as bad as we thought. In fact, you are pretty damn good." And really, that's all we want to hear.

We passed really well at times, but our defending is shockingly bad. We might advance out of the group, but won't go any further than that if our defending doesn't get MASSIVELY better. And it all start in the midfield. We need Torres in there. And we need better wide play.
