I never bought the 'mentally soft' shit. Nobody torches the playoffs as a rookie like he did and is mentally soft. His problem was pure approach against lefties. He simply didn't have a plan against them, especially with 2 strikes. He still really doesn't have an effective putaway pitch against them but he doesn't nibble away over and over again anymore so he doesn't put himself in bad counts against them. He was a guy that would work away away away to lefties and suddenly end up having to come to them and give up a poorly timed double. If he had a legitimate curve or a show-me change, he'd be a true ace but without them he's still a good #2 who will occasionally get innings rolled up on him. People would say that he was cratering under the pressure but the reality was that he just couldn't get the timely out against lefties he needed to get out of innings. Now he is much more aggressive against them and it's night and day. Think about how much better the Cardinals offense is when guys like Heyward and Adams are getting on - well those are the guys that Lynn simply couldn't get through consistently and it would create bad innings. Lynn has always been able to get swings and misses off his fastball. There are very few starting pitchers in baseball that can get people to swing through their fastball, especially without the benefit of a hammer off-speed pitch. If you can get guys to swing and miss at your fastball then you're a really good pitcher and you'll always have a spot in my rotation.

Yeah, dj has always liked Lynn. Good call there. Would still like to see him take on a cutter or a change more often, but not many guus can get swings and misses with the fastball at that level.
I know he isn't hitting, but Heyward brings so much value defensively that if he can just relax and hit the ball and quit pressing, he's a potential MVP type player |

Big difference in the upside that I see if both stay at .250 or below is that Heyward can possibly hit 20 HR's consistently in a year. And he does seem to have a higher ceiling. Heyward just needs to relax. I don't see him being a .300/20/100 guy but with his defense he can be a great addition to our team after this year if he can just do .280/15/75

To my eye he does 2 things well defensively - throw hard and go back on balls. He's not very good coming in on them and while the scouting report says he's good laterally, I've not seen it. We may be falling victim to the perils of ignoring the defensive spectrum. If a guy's an elite RFer, he might just be an above average CFer. Think about it, who else do we know that's really good going back on balls, not so good coming in on them and inconsistent laterally? That's Jon Jay's scouting report, is it not. And Heyward's groundball tendencies and lack of thump thus far have him hitting a lot like Jon Jay as well. If you said that Jason Heyward's essentially Jon Jay with a cannon, you wouldn't be far from the truth right now. And the problem is that he has the same constrained swing that he developed last year that's causing him to lose power. I don't see anything in his mechancis to suggest that he's suddenly going to start hitting 30 bombs or even 20+. Someone needs to get him to work on extending his arms. He appears to have spent so much time working on shortening his swing to speed up his hands and close gaps in his strike zone that he's not getting any extension and his top half is ahead of his legs so he can't coil up and use his legs/back to generate power. In short, his swing is a mother****ing mess right now and it doesn't appear to be any better than what he left Atlanta with. That being the case, why should I expect that John Mabry, who's turned Holliday, Craig and Adams into singles hitters, will be the guy to fix Heyward? I'm disappointed as hell because I desperately wanted this guy in November then we went and got him. We also hired Bill Mueller, the guy who made a huge break through for Anthony Rizzo, as our assistant hitting coach. I was positive we'd see at 25/25 Heyward and I'm just not seeing that as possible with the swing he still has.

It's also 25 games in. It's troubling no doubt, but I'll atleast give the guy til the Allstars break to see what happens.
Like any big trade, the guy is heaping tons of pressure on himself. |

That swing will not hit 20 HRs. It can't. And he's kept it through the offseason and Spring. Pressing explains his Ks and poor OBP but not his lack of power.

Wow I have no idea how the Cards are only down 1 run this game. If they could somehow steal this one, Pirate fans might have a meltdown.

I'm not that worried about home runs, they're nice but I don't know that he's ever going to be a 25 20 hr guy consistently. I'd take 15, with alot of doubles and a high ops. |
