Chiefs trade 34th pick for Cassel and Vrabel

Chiefs just got Cassel, ON NFLN!

http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2009/02...with_patriots/

Quote:
The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Saturday that the club has acquired QB Matt Cassel and LB Mike Vrabel from New England in exchange for the Chiefs second-round pick (34th overall) in the 2009 NFL Draft. The agreement is contingent on both players reporting and passing their physicals.

“I have a long history with both players,” said Kansas City Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli. “Mike and Matt are men that I respect both personally and professionally. I look forward to having them as new members of the Chiefs family.”

He'll have Tony Gonzales here. The Patriots don't have anything close to that kind of a safety valve.

IF we can shore up the right side of the line, there's no reason to think any decent QB, Cassel included, couldn't succeed here. Hell, Tyler Thigpen put up respectable numbers.

You're ignoring the fact we still have the #3.

I'd rather have Cassel, Vrabel, and the #3 pick over Sanchez and Merideth.

Pioli isn't stupid, he knows what the value of inside LB's are. I could see us trading down and taking a more workman-like guy over taking somebody with limited game-breaking credentials at #3.
I would LOVE this. Move back and pick up another second, and a first or second next year and get a weapon at WR or a LB further back in the first.

Anybody else surprised to learn, upon further review, that Matt Cassel rushed for 270 yards last year?

and if we do manage to trade down and pick up a 2nd (yes, i know the rarity of it) then this became a hilariously good deal (in terms of positional value i.e. getting a QB)....and yes i know he could suck and it will turn out to be stupid...

but if we trade down we essentially get him for nothing

Of course, I was wishing that before Pioli was hired.
So we could draft the likes of Kyle Boller?

We still have the draft & FA to address WR and other defensive needs.

Sending Jared Allen packing instead of LJ will go down as Carl Peterson's most braindead move.....
Do you know something about a WR move?

In reality, you could have all four.

He won't go into the season without a new deal. Stop with the crazy talk and enjoy the moment!

You're basically getting that, except the guys we got bring experience & leadership in the new system we are implementing.

To be perfectly honest, prior to Cassel's season at the helm in NE, I would have taken Sanchez (more likely Stafford) over Cassel. Cassel and Sanchez are very similar: USC backups with little/no collegiate experience with good short/intermediate accuracy & questionable deep accuracy.

I have absolutely no doubt Pioli would love the trade down, but I'm not sure there will be a player sitting at #3 that will create enough desire to make a team want to trade up and give up a huge contract.
