I'd be surprised if a Sunday night baseball game pulls higher numbers than an NHL playoff game. Baseball isn't exactly a ratings juggernaut.

Profit. jk of course... it's just the stupidity of "ESPN will grow the game" and then putting it on the back burner when the games matter the most.

I don't know, I'd bet that Red Sox game does pull a better number than the Oilers/Golden Knights last night for ESPN (although one is obviously in prime time and one isn't so it isn't an apples to apples comparison).

Digging around on reddit today, the prevailing opinion is that ESPN probably isn't contractually allowed to cut away from one league's game in favor of another league's game. Yes, the NFL cuts from shitty games, but that's to show another NFL game, which is obviously different.
What I personally don't understand is why they can't at least make it so that people who are (legally) streaming games through the ESPN app can just keep watching their games as usual. It seems ridiculous that every damn time you have to start watching on one channel and then change to another. And for that matter, my biggest issue may be the cuts back. It seems like they've done a reasonable job of putting a banner on the main channel to tell you where to look when the game isn't being shown, but when they do cut back it's often so sudden that I miss it until a commercial break ends and I realize that I've missed a few minutes of the game. Regardless, it's certainly yet another example of how crazy hard they make it to watch, contracts or otherwise. |

Weirdest and closest game I've seen in these playoffs.

TNT was terrible with the banner bar thing early on, there was once they didn't tell anyone the next game was on TruTV until the game was 3 minutes in. ![]() And then of course having two games on 2.5 hours apart, guaranteeing spillover, when they could simply have the games on different networks (or *gasp* overlap and not start games at 9pm local time in Dallas). But, Stars/VGK is about the least sexy match up ever, so I'll be happy to watch Canes/Panthers and go to bed. ![]()

Didn't think there was much public money wrapped up in the Yotes' arena deal, but I know people are always pretty skeptical.... and there's already the Suns' arena and the one in Glendale (and the Diamondbacks already want a new stadium). Probably don't need another one for a team that's been tanking for the past few years and actively tries to get even worse than that.

Any idea if the Sprint Center is already 100% ready to roll with the ice equipment? (I don't live in the area so have no idea what other events they have there.)
There's talk on reddit that the Coyotes may even consider relocating for 2023-2024 since they're otherwise just wasting time in a college stadium, so it seems like game readiness would need to be a consideration. |
