KU claims 30k alums living in the state of Missouri. I have to assume that's pretty accurate.

WTF are you talking about regarding KU enrollment equaling MU enrollment? Mizzou has 34,748 to 24,577 at Kansas.

Given the price of a college education these days, that figure should surprise no one. Which would you rather do if you are a middle class family in Kansas...send you kid to Mizzou and pay twice as much, when you can send them to KU, be with an hour of them, and not spend nearly as much. Same thing for St. Louis...why send your kids to Illinois when Columbia is an easy drive and less expensive? I am not sure what Prison Bitch's point is. I think he is trying to troll by saying the Mizzou has no major markets that is can call its own. What his "facts" have shown is that Mizzou dominates St. Louis, and that Mizzou more than holds its own on the Missouri side of KC. The further you get from State Line Rd in KC, the more of a Mizzou town KC becomes. Not sure why anyone would really care. Both teams get plenty of coverage in town, and both team's games are easily accessible on TV, so fans not living in Lawrence or Columbia get everything they need in terms of coverage.

I'm guessing that "KC area" in this case extends to Lawrence.

They don't get the same coverage in the local sports page. They don't get the same play on sports talk radio (even when Illinois hoops was riding the coattails of Bill Self's recruiting class, they didn't) They don't see huge enrollment numbers from the St. Louis area. And I'm telling you to use your brain and look at the differences in "feeder" options for Illinois grads. Missouri's biggest chunk of student population comes from the St. Louis area, and that city is the primary post-grad destination of most graduates. Illinois gets a tiny chunk of its student population from St. Louis. It's primary destinations post-grad are Chicago, New York, DC, and surprisingly, San Francisco. (BTW, U of I has about 30k undergrads - Mizzou has about 27k). Milwaukee, Madison, Indianapolis and Peoria all get big chunks of Illinois grads, too. Indy and Peoria are closer to U of I. Madison and Milwaukee slightly farther than St. Louis but not significantly. Hilariously stupid is right.

Yeah U of I isn't that big in St. Louis. Hell if you look at the numbers only 24% of the metro in St. Louis is in Illinois to begin with. 60% of Kansas City metro population is in Missouri. But U of I in STL is the same as Mizzou in KC is laughable and talking out of your ass.

Ok. I claimed 80K between the two cities and it looks like it's only 78K. The composition mix is a bit off but your numbers seem believable.

MU's enrollment is actually only 26,545 if we look at undergrads only, which is your listed KU number here. Enrollment has spiked a bit the past few years and is an all-time high for MU. And which is, by most rational people's eyes, about as close to KU's size as they are to any other school in America. http://registrar.missouri.edu/statis...y-combined.pdf |

I'll re-state the point: we have an MU fan here stating it's absurd for the BIG to claim St Louis as a market simply because Illinois is close. I said the SEC makes the identical statement about claiming the KC market. The number of total fans & alumni in each city is comparable. If one is absurd, the other is. (I think they are both absurd personally) |

Being that Kansas is a state with less than half the population of Missouri and has an entire second BCS level school (KSU) I always thought it was incredible how KU overshadowed MU with all the built in advantages MU has. |

I'm sorta laughing at your attempt here. Determining what percent of a state a metro is in is about the dumbest argument imaginable but it's not slowing you down. I was born & raised and live in Missouri but I sure's hell ain't a MU fan. By your logic, I would be included in the MU haul. Put it this way: 60% of KC Metro is in Missouri, but you know very well that 60% of the KC Metro sure ain't Mizzou fans. Not remotely close. |
