I heard this topic on local talk radio (570 KLIF for you in North Texas) the other day, semi-intresting . . .

. . . you ever had a one-on-one conversation with a celebrity? I suppose this would include small talk during an autograph session. Are you related by blood or marriage to a high profile person? Now, I know there is gonna be different opinions on who is considered a celeb and who is not . . . but thats really not the point . . . if you think they're important, that's fine.

My encounters are strictly through autograph sessions . . . and considering I live in BFE, these aren't too bad.

Mario Andretti(sp?), Indy Race Car Driver Rick Mears, KC Chiefs Safety Deron Cherry, Big Band Drummer Ed Shaugnessy (Tonight Show w/ Johnny Carson), Former KC Royal Gary Gaetti

Up until just recently my wife's great aunt lived around the corner from actor Matthew McConaughey's humble home in Austin. We found out recently that Matthew bought a ranch outside the city.

Bob Dole--
Alas, the TKE house was sold and the chapter moved to off of Kimbrough (in the old Gamma Phi house across from the old KA house, now the AKL house). The dance floor brings back fond memories ... met my wife on the that dance floor ... lived right above the dance floor for a year and a half (which got old about 4am) ... have fond memories of the DJ booth as well. ;)

I may cry ... I lived in that house for 3 years and still managed to graduate. Now it's gone.

To stay on topic, Digger Phelps once stopped into the house (he was a TKE) when some people from Nationals came by. He was a very nice guy ... didn't care for the keg fridge, but very nice.

There will be no more parties at that house (sniff ... sniff). The days of 2,000 people crammed on 4 floors is over ... it's now the Lutheran Student Center.

MM
~~Wonders how many exorcisms had to be performed at 816 S. National after September, 1998.

Has anyone seen the movie "Kiss Shot", with Whoopie Goldberg? She portrays a professional pool player, and enters a large tournament at the end of the movie. There is another contestant, big guy with a beard that wipes his face with a hankerchief that looks like an american flag...... he was my cousin. He died several years ago. That's about as close as I get to being related to anyone notable, unless you count the great uncle that was in the mafia. We don't talk about him though... SHHHHHH!!!!!

I've had many discussions with Hollywood celebrities since
Vancouver became a haven for American productions. My first
conversation of memory was with Johnny Depp in 1989 while
on "21 Jump Street" (I had a role as a nerd in love with Holly Robinson's character). We mostly talked about one of the amendments in your constitution..."the right to bear arms". He also hinted that he wanted to shed his teeny-bopper image, and be taken seriously as an actor. He certainly succeeded IMO. I also met Gene Hackman on the set of "Narrow Margin". Incredibly nice guy. More nervous around him than any other star I have ever met. Another
worth mentioning is another one of my favorites, because he's Canadian and a damn fine actor...Donald Sutherland.
My friend was his personal make-up artist on a show and she asked me to come by and meet him, because he had just gotten a Jack-Russell puppy, and I already had a Jack-Russell. Like Hackman, he's a legend. It was surreal talking to him (he tells great stories) while our dogs played in a field. A tidbit of gossip: He didn't have kind words to say about Jamie-Lee Curtis. I also mentioned on this BB that I met Lance Hendrickson on "Millenium". An extremely fascinating guy. He was illiterate until the age of 32. Couldn't read or write. Then, one day, he decided to teach himself, and he did. Among the big stars who rubbed me the wrong way include Ryan Phillipe on the set of "Antitrust". Tim Robbins and director Peter Howitt (Sliding Doors)were nice though. Others I have just said hi to or joked around with include William Devane, Patty Duke, Monica Potter, and Kevin Sorbo. Such encounters are the perks of being an actor in Vancouver, and free trade
with your country.

As most everyone already knows, I got to spend an evening with Tony Richardson last year. A wonderful person, and a super nice guy.

I've also gotten to spend a little time with Buck O'Neal and get a hug from him. He is one of the sweetest people you could ever meet.

I've met Warren Moon - a nice guy and so knowledgable about football.

And I've met Tony Gonzalez and gotten a hug from him...MMMmmmmmm.

I was in the hospital when I was a kid and was able to meet George Brett. It all happened in 1980, I was recovering from surgery and George was rehabbing his injured ankle. The nurses in physical rehab knew I was an avid baseball fan and they knew George was being tested on the Cybex machine to test the strength in his ankle. The nurses brought George over to me and introduced him to me. I was lying flat on back because of surgery, but that sure didn’t phase me. I was in awe. Keep in mind I had always been an avid baseball fan and George was the best playing ball in that time frame.

The nurses all thought he was a spoiled rich brat, he may have been. But the best thing about the whole thing was George actually stopped by my hospital room to say hi on occasion. That was fantastic.

The Royals’ used to have a group of ball players that would go to various pediatric wards in the hospitals in the KC area. I was able to meet: Pete LaCock and his father Peter Marshall, Joe Zeb, and Tom Pouquette.

I've met 2 famous people.

1st, when I was a sophmore in high school we had a parade in my home town, and I drove a car in the parade with Bob Dole.

The 2nd, this goes back to the Howard Cosell days on Monday Night Football. I was probably about 20 years old at the time, and was in the bar in my home town of about 400 people. It was the opening day of phesant season, and Mike Torrez, who had just completed pitching in the World Series (may have even been MVP) was up hunting as a guest of our banker. We , about 6 or 7 of us, were all shooting pool and drinking a few beers, when Cosell started talking about Torrez just signing a new contract that day with either the Yankees or Red Sox (can't remember after all these years which team), but they couldn't find Torrez for comment. It was pretty neat!

For two years, I lived in Crested Butte Colorado...thats right the ski resort. I worked in a popcorn stand right on the side of the mountain.

I sold popcorn to John Denver and some others. The best was when the Chicago Bears came to ski and ride snow mobiles.

I had some good friends that ran a snowmobile company. The Bears came to ride. The fridge could not ride because everytime he would lean to corner...he was so heavy, the mobile would just lay down. Funniest damn thing you ever saw. If I had thought about that, I would have recorded it. They were all very friendly, (course, we were treating them like kings)

My mother says we are related to Samuel Clemons (Mark Twain) only wish I were getting royalties.

I met Vincent Price in '83 - he was somehow affiliated with the college in my hometown and came back every couple of years and gave seminars (on what I can't remember). This was the year Thriller came out, and when he first came out they played the song and he did the laugh at the end live. That was cool. Shook his hand and said hello to him on the way out - he seemed like a really nice guy.

I met Len Dawson before a Bears/Chiefs game in Chicago a few years ago - well, sort of. I got to Soldier Field about three hours before the game started - they hadn't even set up the ticket machines yet, so I just walked in. No one said anything to me, and eventually I wandered down on the field. I was standing in the endzone, looked up, and Len was walking right towards me. I was so dumbfounded that all I could say was "Mr. Dawson?" He said "hi" and walked right past me. I felt like a total idiot.

Luckily I was able to get an autograph from Marcus Allen that day (in person - he was very cool to do it before the game, too), so it wasn't a total loss.

I met Jerry Fontenot (center for the Saints and former Bears center) about 10 years ago. DAMN, IS HE BIG - took up the entire doorway. Nice guy.

My law firm represents several Chicago celebrities, but so far the only one I've seen is Will Purdue (formerly of the Bulls). DAMN, IS HE TALL!

I've seen a few other stars filming or walking down the street in Chicago, but never talked to any of them, so I guess that doesn't count.

As a collector of Chiefs items, I called Len Dawson on the phone one time and told him I was visiting Kansas City on my vacation and ask him if he would autograph some items for me. He told me to meet him at the tv station and spent about 30 minutes talking to me and my son. The guy is a first class nice guy.

On the same trip I went to Bobby Bell's BBQ and ask the girls there if he was in. One of them gave me a phone number to call the next day to see if he would be in. The following morning I called the number and got Bobby on his car phone. He told me to meet him at his restuarant and came and sat at a booth looked at a bunch of my things, signed some autographs and treated my son and I to lunch. He is also a class act.

At the viewing for Derrick Thomas I ran into Otis Taylor and we spent about an hour talking about our days at Richards-Gebar AFB in the AF Reserves.

I find that the older Chiefs players like to spend time with the fans.
