For Oldtimers: LJ vs Okoye

I was watching the video posted by Nzoner (link here) of the Chiefs rolling the Bills in 1991 at Arrowhead against the SB bound Bills. Okoye was amazing.

Made me wonder - straight up - would you rather have LJ or Christian Okoye?

You young guys will not remember the Nigerian Nightmare - a 260 pound load of muscle, speed and heart.

I will add my all time fave Donnell Bennett to the poll...

No, not even close. I would take LJ in a minute, and I didn't miss a single Okoye game.

LJ is more likely to create a win. Okoye fumbled more than LJ, and LJ is a better receiver. Christian might have been a better pass blocker, but if I'm choosing sides, I'll take LJ.

Sorry Johnny, Bennett was a slug who only scored 17 TD's in 8 years. He averaged a pedestrian 3.7 ypc for his career. I loved Okoye. He wore lineman shoulder pads and always jogged past the opposing bench before the game to exhibit his size. He had speed but we never saw it as he rarely got loose. 3.9 ypc. LJ has faults but is always dangerous. Would be even more dangerous if the opposing D had to respect our passing game. 4.6 ypc. I'll take LJ.

Exactly, in fact, I preferred Barry Word even at that time. He was powerful, with speed.

Word was better than Bennett but not by much. Only 16 TD's in 7 years. 4.1 ypc.

Okoye was consistent behind his line. LJ has had inconsistencies from his line. LJ is a homerun threat even if Okoye occassionally hit it out of the park. What I would like to see from that era is the Deberg fake handoffs.

Fix the line play and then I could maybe dump on LJ if his play didn't improve. I'm just talking about average play by the line. Not so many negative running plays for instance.

Fix the line and I think LJ does very well.

I know you have that reference site you go to, but, Word was not used as often as he could have been.
He broke loose numerous times, but was stuck in the 3 man RB by committee with Harvey Williams and Christian Okoye part of the time. He also had some injuries and legal problems that kept him off the field IIRC.
I would take Word's combination of size and speed anyday.

Okoye's hands were pretty good seeing his first experience playing organized football was in college with Azusa Pacific College.
That's bull. Okoye split time with Word and ran behind a much better offensive line. And when Word was on top of his game, he was just as good as Okoye. The play-action was not set up by Okoye. It was set up by great play-action quarterbacks like Deberg, Krieg, and Montana.

You really do like to stretch things, don't you. Johnson is twice the running back talent that Okoye is. And I liked Okoye just as much as you did.

I wonder how much has changed in the NFL since Okoye's time. From what I remember Okoye was a far more powerful runner but that beg's the question: How much more powerful has everyone else gotten since then. And even though we complain about LJ's receiving and pass blocking I'm thinking he's better than Okoye was but I'm not sure Okoye was asked to do as much. Still the Word/Okoye backfield has a special place in my heart, they were the duo when I was old enough to start paying attention to these things.
