I've already explained that point. It's not about the behind the curtains BS, the draft pics and the money. It's about the player on the field, and I think Coles will not be the same player.

So can he or can he not stretch the field anymore? That's about the only question that matters, and there are conflicting views on this in this thread.

He had some long-ass catches last year, three games in a row with a catch over 40 yards.

Basically. Coles is a tough guy who can make some difficult catches and the occasional big play or two. But he's not a deep receiver.

He's also one concussion away from retirement.

LC not a burner

I know LC well as a JETS fan.
1. LC is a tough, physical WR.
2. He is not fast as he used to be. Therefore he is not a burner. He is a very good possession receiver.
3. He had several injury issues, last two years: concussion and ankle.
4. While he is tough, he is also known as a "whiner."

The overall Jets fans' response to his release? Good riddance.

This release is interesting. JETS do not need to pay his guaranteed 6 million.

Per NY Daily News:

"Okay, here's the deal on the Laveranues Coles situation. Technically, they didn't release him, but they restructured the final year of his contract, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent on Friday.

In other words, they voided the final year. And, from what I'm told, his $6 million salary (guaranteed) will come off the Jets' salary cap.

It's hard to believe that Coles would've surrendered that much in guaranteed money for his freedom - he could've had his freedom and the guarantee - but he apparently reached a good-faith compromise with the team."

I don't know who it will be, but I fully expect Haley to bring in a WR. Whether it be Harrison, Coles, Galloway, or Booker... I think he adds someone and then maybe a younger guy like Moore to go with Bowe, Bradley, and Franklin.

If this is true than Coles is a gambler.

ON FURTHER REVIEW, COLES WALKED AWAY FROM HIS $6 MILLION

Posted by Mike Florio on February 25, 2009, 5:55 p.m.

OK, now this is getting weird.

Despite a report in the New York Daily News that the guaranteed $6 million in base salary that receiver Laveranues Coles is due to earn from the Jets will be reduced by whatever he earns elsewhere, Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger has clarified for us that Coles has walked away from the guaranteed payment.

So, in other words, Coles gave up $6 million guaranteed in search of even more.

So, in other words, the Jets owe him nothing.

There’s a fine line between bravery and stupidity. As to where Coles falls on this specific issue, we’ll all have to wait and see.

If he's released, I'd rather go after Torry Holt than Coles.

I think it'll be interesting if Haley is interested in Bryant Johnson and I also wouldn't be disappointed if they went after Michael Clayton.

Coles may have walked away from $6M... but, he's still a good weapon and he'll make that back with another team.

I can think of better ways of spending $6 mil per year on a player besides Coles. Maybe Snyder will want him the most.
