Football Outsiders Ranks Matt Cassel 44th of 46 QBs

Giving him a ranking of 463 yards below replacement level.

QBs who finished behind Cassel: Stafford and Russell.

QBs who finished ahead of Cassel: Everyone else in the NFL who threw more than 100 passes.

On a positive note, he was 38/46 on a per play basis, narrowly edging out Josh Freeman.

On another positive note, Brodie Croyle would have finished 25 had he accumulated enough attempts.

Top 5 QBs (In order)

1. Brady
2. Manning
3. Rivers
4. Brees
5. Favre

"Quarterbacks are ranked according to DYAR, or Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement. This gives the value of the quarterback's performance compared to replacement level, adjusted for situation and opponent and then translated into yardage."

What is replacement level?

It is what it is, an analysis based on a set of criteria. I usually don't base my entire evaluation of a player based on a single rating system. The analysis presented here has it's value, but should be taken for what it is.

For example, last year Cassel's DYAR and DVOA far exceeded Big Ben's. I'm not going to use that as a basis to say that Cassel as a QB has more value than Roethlisberger, because that would be incorrect...

In its simplest terms, replacement level refers to the theory that when a starter is injured, he's replaced by a replacement level player - or a bench rider.

So replacement level represents the play of the average backup QB.

In this case, Cassel grades out 18 slots behind replacement level.

If you want something more detailed, you should read Football Outsiders. They do excellent work.

You don't need stats to see it. Just apply the eye test. When he gets his chances during games he misses way too much, and that's not going to change.

I was wishing the Chiefs had the 2nd string freshman QB from Texas last night. He showed way more pocket presence the second half, than I saw from Cassel all year.

Proof that you cant take a kid that only started 15 games through his whole college and pro career, combined, and drop him off on a 2-14 team devoid of talent and then proceed to deprive him of a qb coach and OC that is required for a young qb to learn and progress, right before the season starts, and then installing a new offense days before the season starts and expect him to succeed in that scenario. Or even be average. <----I realize this is a poorly worded, long, run on sentence, but Im not changing it.

I and many others expected a below average year from him, just not this bad.

Im willing to bet that he makes a pronounced jump up in these rankings by this time next year after some of these gaping weaknesses are fixed and he progresses as qbs with his work ethic do.

Casino cash
avatar rights
sig rights

I am willing to put any of these three on the line against any of the "horsemen" to say that Cassel cuts that number in half and ends up at least 22nd in these rankings next year or better. This puts me at a huge disadvantage because it is dependent on Pioli filling the holes that are there to give the kid a chance at achieving this, but I am basing my thoughts on the fact that I fully believe that Pioli looked at this as a evaluation year and that he will fill a couple needed holes to help his investment succeed. So call me a homer for this all you want or claim I am calling for a miracle, but I honestly think it is ralistic to expect that type of improvement or better. The kid is not a total loss.

I expected a below average to poor performance this year. That showed to be more than realistic, I just never thought it would have been this bad.

I realistically expect Pioli to fill at least half the holes we have on offense and for Weis to make a big difference in the progression of Mr Cassel.

Who is game?

/hopes this doesn't backfire, but one has to have hope
