Hotels near Universal Studios in Orlando

I know most people go to Orlando to go to Disney World, but I'm going to go to Universal Studios. Has anyone stayed near there? I'm looking on hotels.com, reading reviews, etc. Just thought I'd see what you all thought. I am looking to walk most places, if possible.

I stayed here a couple of years ago. The place is great. You can walk to City Walk and Universal Studios or they have a boat that will take you there. You won't have to drive anywhere.

I was gonna say walking would be hard to do. But I think hotels have shuttles. I usually just drive out there and use my care. When I used to fly down the hotel had a shuttle to the parks.

Don't rent a hotel room. Get yourself a condo rental. A three years ago we rented a brand spanking new upscale two bedroom unit for $69 a night and a nominal cleaning fee.

With the economy hurting and the foreclosure mess I bet there are AMAZING deals right now.

We did drive to and from US but it was maybe 6 miles so it wasn't much gas and no toll. Traffic was about what you would expect in KC during rush hour. Parking was reasonable. We were glad we had the car with us because we packed sandwiches and stuff (beer and margaritas) in coolers and were able to save money not buying their high priced unhealthy food. Just be sure to get there early so you are not parking in BFE and having to walk long distances to your car. We also had a change of clothes so when you are soaking wet from Florida humidity you could change into something fresh for the afternoon.

We figured we saved money and ate healthier that way. Plus, having a place (the condo) to fix your own meals rocks.

In addition, US is awesome. My kids (boys) have chosen to go there vs. Disney each time we have gone to FL since they were preschoolers. We have bought the 3 and 5 day passes because with specials they were running it was usually cheaper than two days. But after two and a half days at US you are usually ready for something else. Head to Cocoa Beach.

Thats where my wife and I are staying in 3 weeks when we go.

Still trying to decide. Do I want to stay in Orlando the entire time? Do I want to get a hotel for Wednesday-Friday nights, drive and stay in Daytona Saturday night, and then Sanford Sunday night to catch my plane Monday morning? I suck at making decisions. I think I'm just going to use hotwire and put myself out of this misery...lol.

Well, I got the Crowne Plaza Orlando Universal Hotel, normally a $125/night room, for $76/night on hotwire. I decided to check out of Orlando on Saturday morning and drive to a body of water. Do I want Jacksonville Beach, Palm Coast Beach, Daytona Beach, Tampa, St Petersburg, or Clearwater?

Luv, I wish I could be more help, but visiting there for me I always have a place to stay for free. But I can tell you to choose Clearwater, that's my favorite beach.
