Tony Moeaki

I've been watching some tape of the 2010 season. I spent part of the evening just watching Moeaki's own game, what he does each play. How he blocks, what routes he runs (when he's on camera -- I don't have GoChiefs' ****ing amazing coach view), and his blocking assignments.

I'm dead serious when I say this people, but other than lacking top speed explosiveness that you really only see in more one-dimensional athletic TEs, there are zero holes in this guy's game.

Seriously. We have perennial Pro Bowler talent here.

He simply has glue for hands. They are easily the best hands on this team -- with zero no-brainer drops that Bowe is occasionally guilty of. His routes could probably use a little refinement, but he finds good spots in zone coverage and can get that hint of leverage on a defender that Tony G used to be able to get to avail himself for a quick dart.

As good as his hands are, it's his run blocking that truly makes him special. Vernon Davis may be the only tight end in the league that's capable of blocking this good while still being a damn good receiver, and Davis comes with consistency and maturity issues that Moaeki simply doesn't have.

He handles everything from 4-3 DEs and up, and he seemingly gets his way every single time as if he's the team's ****ing blocking tight end.

It's getting to the point where I'm wondering why the Chiefs would EVER take him out of the field.

It's not terribly hard to find a veteran comparison to Moeaki. We've already seen it here in Kansas City for a decade. Tony Moeaki can make every catch Tony Gonzalez was seemingly capable of. He's just as athletic. He might become the better blocker, if he's not already. And he was a team captain at Iowa -- there's simply no reason he can't become the vocal leader Gonzalez was here in Kansas City.

I'm loving watching this kid play. He does his job as well as anybody on the field, he is consistent, and best of all, he's just a pleasure to watch.

It may turn out that was simply bad luck, but until he gets through more than one season relatively unscathed, it remains a concern.
This.

There's never been a debate about his talent. Only about his ability to stay healthy.

Were there people that were less than thrilled with the pick? Sure.

But they were almost universally "less than thrilled" because of the injury history, and the thought that we didn't need to trade up to take him.

He'll be an important part of this team for the next 5-10 years - IF he can stay healthy.

Mizzou? Numb ****.
Those of us who watched Moeaki through his college careers know what kind of hands he has, how smart he is, what a good route runner he is.
We also know he wasn't always able to get on the field. This is your concern as a Chief fan.
As a Hawkeye I hope TM stays healthy, he's one of the good guys.

As one that was livid about the pick: your ass actually tastes pretty good. I'm more than happy to kiss ass when it turns out I was wrong and I'm very happy to have been wrong on Moeaki.

I didn't see him being as polished a blocker as he was in his rookie season. That was what impressed me the most, well, other than the fact that none of his bones fractured.

I didn't have some special tape nor did I go back and rewatch the season, but during the season I was wondering why he wasn't in more and why wasn't he getting the ball more when he was in.

I agree, Moeaki is a killer TE already, but his game is different than TG's was.

And, I wish Mizzou was in Iowa.

I am obviously a big Hawkeye fan.

No question.

I honestly don't think it has taken from my objectivity, though.

In the 2010 draft, I was high on Angerer and Moeaki and bother were "re-drafted" by rich gosslein as first rounders.

Fact is, the only Hawkeye player I have been real far off on my evaluation of how he transitions to the NFL (and about what round he will go in) in all my time on message boards was Mitch King.

That kid could have been a stud if he would have kept his nose clean.
What did you think of Robert Gallery when he was drafted?
