That's awesome. I hope he takes the motivation to come back in his best form possible and has an awesome year.

This would be a good time to dial up some void years. Rework his current deal to add 3-4 void years and bonus out a huge portion of his roster bonuses this year. Push $12M over 3 added voided years, or $16M over 4.

Helps the team make the changes it needs to send him off as a champion after this year, keeps his pay for this year level (or higher), and makes the end a happy one.

Will say it again… it’s hard to get worked up over $20m to a player who brings in over $300m of unique value to the team. Let alone a guy who does it as a great leader and without ego. Let alone a guy who is still effective and could be extremely effective if we settle him into a role.

Forget about paying him out of pity. There are plenty of ways outside of the salary cap you can pump that money back into the team. Because after next year, quite possibly a big chunk of that is gone after he retires. Unless you don’t trust in Clark but he’s more than earned the benefit of the doubt
