I think the Cardinals have to do something big mainly because of the Cubs. Them beating you in the playoffs, combined with them probably going to make a big splash more than likely = Cardinals have to make a move.

Olney saying cards interested in zobrist, to be a bench utility guy.

Given his age I'm not really a huge fan, but makes alot of sense.

Wouldn't zobrist start if he stays in KC? Doesn't make much sense.

Zobrist will start somewhere. Now if we make a big move as most expect, Wong could be a part of that deal and then the Cards open their pocketbooks for Zobrist and use him in the starting lineup.

I like him but we need offense. If they want to get him and get some more offense then I'm good with that but now Carp is playing 1B or 2B. You'd better have Wong in some deal for a 1B hitter. But, the odds of getting a top of the line 1B is pretty slim. 3B is going to be easier to pull off.

Just saw a sad article that Cards great Lou Brock lost part of his lower leg to diabetes. I remember him well as a kid watching baseball.

My prediction stands: Heyward, lackey walk.
Mo signs a couple of "bench" guys and maybe a bullpen arm.
Then goes low rent on a leftover starter that he invites to ST.
Piscotty in RF, Adams at 1B.

The usual big market teams make splashes. Cards get extra picks. Life goes on.

Is that what you think should happen?

Basically do nothing and take the approach that DJ said earlier in the thread. Write off this year and save your bullets for later?

Why save bullets for later if you think you have a reasonable shot to make the postseason?

And seriously, who are the Cardinals really going to go after that would cost a real bullet?

If you sign Heyward and Price you're effectively replacing Holliday and Wainwright as the best position player and ace of the staff, respectively. Those things were going to have to happen anyway. And at some point, the team is going to have to spend some money, because it's hard to run out 25 cost-controlled guys every night.

Losing Lynn hurts, but you're talking about 3-ish wins. If some combination of Lyons, Marco, and Cooney are passable back-of-the-rotation guys, that's about a win and a half. Couple that with a full season of Wainwright and Price, and even with letting Lackey go, the rotation actually stacks up better than in '15, and doesn't need ridiculous levels of luck-based run suppression to sustain it.

Go after Price hard. Sign Heyward. Make a move for an infielder and a backup catcher.

You still get an extra 2016 pick to replenish the farm.

I like these options too. The Cardinals are going to be recieving an additional $115 million a year starting in 2017. They had better spend that money and not pocket it. We need a top pitcher to replace Waino. Price/Waino/Wacha/Martinez will allow us to have a realistic chance in the 2016 playoffs. We will still need more offense.

so now it comes out that Lynn's "forearm strain" back in June was really the ligament and he and the Cardinals knew he would probably need Tommy John surgery to fix it.

No, I agree with the consensus: get Heyward re-signed, get one of the big name starters, address the bench.

But we're not calling the shots. Also, no way Heyward should get $200 million. If that's what he ends up with, can't really blame Mo.
