NFL needs a spring time minor league system in the United States. It would help quarterback development while also giving more coaching gigs available. Not to mention fill scheduling time on NFL Network.

I'd be interested in this too. I was thinking the same about NFL Europe, but the problem is, they took it too seriously. Don't market this as a big name league with a bunch of superstars. Create a small stadium, make it a fun spring/summer stadium with drinks (like they do with minor league games), and put it in markets that would love a football presence. Omaha, Des Moines, OKC... lots of markets that would probably embrace a minor league team.

I used to think it was a dated rule until recently. J.C Person made a pretty good argument as to why it is still needed. He said (paraphrasing) its not that owners refuse to hire minority candidates. He said its an old boy network were they keep things within their inner circle, not purposely, just that they tend to trust people they know, and that inner circle just happens to be mostly white guys. He said its still needed so we have a more diverse pool of candidates.

I could care less about the rule. Interview as many candidates as possible, then hire the best possible HC to turn your franchise around and start winning again. The same rule is applied from the GM to the long snapper, I don't care what the color of their skin is.

You're right, I got my facts mixed up. Lovie Smith was widely believed to have benefited from the rule. Dungy was hired by Rooney as the NFL's first black coordinator. Dungy, though, is the best case to show the struggle. He was a very qualified candidate, but it took him years and years to even get a sniff of a head coaching job.
