Musical Perspective Survey

I was having a conversation with a buddy last night about personalities and how they're related to music. It got me thinking and I ended up developing this survey because I thought it would be neat to see how the Music-niks here respond...

Here's the survey, along with my answers to get it started.

Favorite Album (1960's) - Pink Floyd, "Piper at the Gates of Dawn"
Favorite Band/Artist (1960's) - The Band of Gypsies (Jimi Hendrix)

Favorite Album (1970's) - David Bowie, "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars"
Favorite Band/Artist (1970's) - Motorhead

Favorite Album (1980's) - Metallica, "Master of Puppets"
Favorite Band/Artist (1980's) - Joe Satriani

Favorite Album (1990's) - Monster Magnet, "Powertrip"
Favorite Band (1990's) - Radiohead

Favorite Album (2001-2005) - Queens of the Stone Age, "Songs for the Deaf"
Favorite Album of 2006 - Wolfmother, self-titled

Favorite Musical Decade - 1970's
Favorite Band (from that decade, not already listed) - Black Sabbath
Song the epitomizes your feelings on that decade - Ted Nugent, "Stranglehold"

Background: I'm a child of the 60's. I grew up listening to James Taylor, Carley Simon, The Righteous Brothers, Bob Dylan, and Simon and Garfunkle. After being shipped off to Viet Nam in 69, I came back a Country and Western fan and remained so almost to the current day. Johnny Cash and George Jones stick out in my mind the most from that period. The Hair bands of the whatever era that was made me want to puke. To this day I still do not own an album by Motley Crue, Poison, Bon Jovi, or Van Halen. I admit I'm left high and dry by any man who has to look like a woman to sing. Just a little over a year ago I decided to see what I had been missing all my life. For the last 18 months I have been sampling as much rock/hard rock/metal/heavy metal as I can find. Some of it is very good, some of it I can live without ever hearing again.
So anyway, I jumped into the rock scene with no preconceived ideas of what is supposed to be good or bad (except for the obvious exception of hair bands). This, without further ado, is my list.

Favorite Album (1960's) - Bod Dylan's Greatest Hits
Favorite Band/Artist (1960's) - The Righteous Brothers

Favorite Album (1970's) - A Question of Balance - The Moody Blues
Favorite Band/Artist (1970's) - Jethro Tull

Favorite Album (1980's) - Back in Black - AC/DC
Favorite Band/Artist (1980's) AC/DC

Favorite Album (1990's) - Monster Magnet, "Powertrip" or Metallica - Metallica
Favorite Band (1990's) - Metallica

Favorite Album (2001-2005) - ?
Favorite Album of 2006 - Stadium Arcade - Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Favorite Musical Decade - flexible
Favorite Band not yet mentioned - Motorhead; Guns and Roses; Kamelot
Song the epitomizes your feelings on that decade - She Hates Me - Puddle of Mud

I just can't do it...I can't pick one favorite...all I can do is make lists of artists and songs in no order...

Or stuff based on moods or situations...

This survey would prob make my head explode.

I agree with this statement on the whole. I just based my choices on who I listen to the most often after I've gotten over the new. I mean, I haven't even listed bands/performers that I think are great and I love to listen to - from Joe Cocker and Otis Redding to Aerosmith and Queensryche and Pink Floyd. I absolutely love to listen to Jack Johnson when I'm in a mellow mood - Hinder and Blue October to name a couple of relatively new groups - and I could listen to Amy Lee of Evanescense all day.

I'm with you.

I tried to fill out the survey, but I just couldn't limit myself to one group or album per decade.

Am man, I'd be interested to see your list. We know you have broad taste in music so just have someone put a gun to your head until your list is finished.

Well, OK:

Favorite Album (1960's) - In The Court of the Crimson King (King Crimson)
Favorite Band/Artist (1960's) - The Who

Favorite Album (1970's) - Close to the Edge (Yes)
Favorite Band/Artist (1970's) - Yes

Favorite Album (1980's) - The Dream of the Blue Turtles (Sting)
Favorite Band/Artist (1980's) - Yes*

Favorite Album (1990's) - Ten (Pearl Jam)
Favorite Band (1990's) - Yes*

Favorite Album (2001-2005) - In Absentia (Porcupine Tree)
Favorite Album of 2006 - none

Favorite Musical Decade - 1970s
Favorite Band (from that decade, not already listed) - Genesis
Song the epitomizes your feelings on that decade - "Close to the Edge," Yes

* I'm not sure how to answer the question. This was not Yes' best work, yet they remained active and were still my favorite band.

I'm really unhappy with that list. It looks too narrow, like I only listen to 2-3 groups or albums. I certainly lean to one genre of music (prog), but I listen to lots of stuff.

Thinking a litte bit while I was working I would say for the 90's Peter Gabriel's "US" album really stands out to me.

It may sound corny but that work took my mind a lot of places it would have never been without...there was so much that went into it that was incredible. Shaped my music tastes for ever.
