Gruden fired by Tampa Bay (NFLN)

Per Sheffter, NFLN

I'll get a link as soon as one is available.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=090...s&confirm=true

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired coach Jon Gruden on Friday, as was first reported by NFL Network's Adam Schefter.
Jon Gruden.

General manager Bruce Allen was also dismissed. After the team collapsed following a 9-3 start and failed to make the playoffs, the organization decided to go in a different direction.

"We will be forever grateful to Jon for bringing us the Super Bowl title, and we thank Bruce for his contributions to our franchise," said Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer. "However, after careful consideration, we feel that this decision is in the best interest of our organization moving forward."

The Buccaneers were tied for first place in the NFC South heading into December, but finished with losses to Carolina and Atlanta on the road and San Diego and Oakland at home, where they had been 6-0. One more win would have landed a NFC wild-card berth.

The 9-7 record this season left Tampa out of the playoffs for the fourth time in six years.

Gruden went 60-57 in seven seasons as head coach of the Buccaneers, including the playoffs. He was the youngest coach to win a Super Bowl when he led Tampa Bay to a 48-21 win over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, his first season with the team.

Gruden was Tampa Bay's coach for seven years before being dismissed. Allen was general manager for the last five seasons.

Gruden's firing means that there will be 10 new head coaches next season, the most since the 2005-06 season.

Information from the Associated Press was included in this report

It didn’t take long for the Detroit Lions’ new head coach, Jim Schwartz, to begin reaching out to assistant coaching candidates.

Schwartz asked for and received permission to interview Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham, who worked with him on the Tennessee Titans’ staff from 2001 to 2003.

Cunningham’s job security in Kansas City is tenuous at best, and the fact that he was one of the first coaches that Schwartz contacted is a sign of how much he is wanted in Detroit. One league source said that Cunningham is expected to be hired in Detroit.

Cunningham could wind up being Schwartz’s defensive coordinator with the Lions, working under him in the same way he did for three seasons when he was the Titans’ linebackers coach and Schwartz was the defensive coordinator.

If it’s the end of Cunningham’s career in Kansas City, the curtain will fall on a man who had an attachment to the city. Cunningham spent 11 years with the Chiefs, including two in which he was the head coach in 1999 and 2000.

Cowher to Kansas City in 2010?
Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Bill Cowher, Boomer Esiason, Kansas City Chiefs, Scott Pioli

File this one under a Chiefs area to watch next season.

CBS analyst Boomer Esiason said on his WFAN-NY radio show this week that he wouldn’t be surprised if Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli hired Bill Cowher to coach the team in 2010.

This is intriguing on any number of levels.

For starters, Esiason works with Cowher and is familiar with his thinking.

Then there is the matter of Esiason also saying that Cowher and Pioli are close friends.

Also, Cowher served as the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator from 1989 to 1991, so he is familiar with the city.

And Pioli appears to have been stymied so far in his search for Kansas City’s next head coach. Sources around the league insist that Pioli had interest in bringing along Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as his head coach, but the Denver Broncos hired him.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz also is thought to appeal to Pioli, but the indications are that he isn’t willing to leave the school.

And when Pioli stepped to the podium for his introductory press conference Wednesday, he said he would sit down and speak with Chiefs coach Herm Edwards, whom Pioli knows, likes and respects.

Edwards could be the holdover, the bridge to the next head coach, partly because other coaches weren’t available, partly because Pioli likes him and partly because Edwards already has one year left on his contract that’s scheduled to expire after next season.

But the coaching watch of 2010 already has almost as much intrigue as the ongoing coaching watch of 2009.
