Ten Things About Today's Game

Ten Things About Today's Game

10. This weekend has been a great time to live in Kansas City. The Royals clinched their second World Series in a row Friday night with a thrilling ninth inning shutdown of Toronto. The weather here is perfect, the trees and turning colors, and as Bill Grigsby used to say "It's a Beau-ti-ful Day for football." When your team is 1-5, you don't expect much. So today was pretty stress free. Nothing really riding on today's game. Pittsburgh is in a fight for the NFC North, so this game meant much more to them. This morning I thought this would be a good time to use the Ten Things to show some of our CPers who don't live in KC, and have never been to Arrowhead, what the tailgate thing looks like. So I took my camera and snapped some pictures as the morning progressed. We'll do a little of that before talking game stuff.

Spoiler!

Meh. To me, it's like a manager that gets ejected to fire the team up. Or a goon enforcing in hockey even if it lands you in a penalty box. Throwing at a hitter even if you know it will get you ejected.

It would be one thing if this was an isolated incident. I don't know if you remember the Denver game where Bronco d-bags were diving on Charles shoulder-first well after he was down on the ground. It happened all game. Alex Smith has taken plenty of cheap shots. It's been happening all year. So yeah, I get GB's comment about taking revenge later... but if the point is to send a message to teammates that you have their back, a 15-yard penalty is just as effective. Either way, I don't think you want to be subtle about it.

That is really badass.

But let's be real. It was also good fortune that the play after, Largent had the chance to unload like that. In most cases, to make a big enough noticeable statement, you usually have to take yourself out of the play. And you have to make a hit hard enough to make a statement which, many times, will get flagged anyway.

I had a great time in Kansas City with my kids this weekend. It was my kids first time at Arrowhead and I think we all had fun. I haven't been back to a game since we got beat by th I don't don't want talk about that. I would have taken my kids to games but the Chiefs have been disappoint over the years so didn't think it be worth it. Howe ever this weekend was and they just happened to win. Really wish we had a better showing of Chiefs fans than Steelers fans. Though look. Me (KC Tattoo) & Red Vador covered a This is Steelers Country banner. How dare they.

 photo IMAG0179_zpsiwfolvod.jpg

Was glad to send the Steelers away with a loss don't come into our house and think you can take over.

At one point they scored a touchdown and I thought it was incomplete because the roar of the crowd was so loud. Geeze. I wanted give my kids the experience of Chiefs fans being loud but we had fun and for that it was worth it.

Did you miss that it was the same guy who concussed him out of the game, and knocked out two teeth, just a couple of weeks earlier?

Or that he recovered the fumble?

What more do you want out of the guy?

The Todd was probably unhappy about his team's lack of offensive output - don't take it personally; The Todd still loves us.

Huh? I said it was a badass revenge play by Largent.

I'm saying that to get a legal revenge hit, you're not always going to have that perfect situation teed up for you. So I don't mind taking a penalty if the point is to get a message across.

My bad, I thought you meant he was 'lucky' to get the hit, not merely lucky to avoid the flag.

And to be fair, your fuller quote was 'badass, but let's be real . . . lucky'

There was another thing I forgot to mention. Remember how in previous weeks Alex kept wandering down to the Defensive bench, sitting there all by himself sulking? None of that today. I don't know if he took it on himself, or if he had a come to Jesus meeting with Andy, but today in the second half especially, he was talking to his O-line and to his receivers and backs while the defense was on the field. They all seemed much more engaged, and it showed by producing TD drives in the second half. That's progress.

1. More thing from post-game. If there ever was positive bulletin board material, Tomlin's remark about 'the game got tight, and they made the dynamic plays' should be blown up poster sized.

I think it's just a matter of being smart. Make your statements between the whistles.

What did we gain by having Fisher go over and jaw at the defender? Do we think West ended up with 10 more rushing yards because he knew Fish Daddy "had his back"? He wouldn't have had the reserves to jump over the goal line without that show of camaraderie? In all likelihood it just cost us yardage and painted a target on Fish's back.

I like my guys to be mean while the ball is live. Take that aggression out on the receiver crossing the middle. Take it out on the QB when you're a free rusher. I can live with those types of penalties because they have lasting effects on the game. The receiver will hesitate to extend himself for the catch after you lay a big hit on him. The QB will get happy feet and miss his reads/throws anticipating big hits.

"dynamic plays" Are those the plays that the receivers would be so wide open and catch the ball but fall to the ground making the catch and then try get up to run but get tackled?

In most cases I'd agree with you. But again, the offense has been cheap shotted and soft all year long. I don't think an aggressive play later makes nearly the same statement as addressing it right after it happens.

A revenge pitch puts a batter on base maybe gets your pitcher booted. A hockey player revenge hitting a guy gives up a power play. But they're done for a reason. They can get your team charged up. If teammates have each other's back, that's the best way to get them to start playing hard. It may not have gotten West 10 more yards. But I'm sure he appreciated it.

Well obviously we'd add THAT to the bulletin board as well.

Jackass.

Since George mentioned it, I'll throw in one of the "buzzkills" of today that I didn't mention in the GDT.

A woman who sits in front of me and Discuss Dad has been taking photos of every home game going back to the 80s. Her camera, while big, hasn't apparently been an issue until today when she was hand delivered by two security officials a "fan code of conduct" citation coupled with a verbal explanation that her camera is "high definition" and therefore not allowed at Arrowhead.

Why this was an issue today of all days is what I can't figure out, especially after the Pioli era where the sideline was patrolled by both CSC contracted fan control personnel (which is to be expected) along with men wearing suits, sunglasses and earpieces. If the Chiefs were ever to have an issue with her camera (which, again, is beyond your standard cellphone shooter or pocket digital camera but definitely not a telephoto lens or some shit you'd expect an average AP scrub to have) it would have been then considering the lengths Pioli went to ensure nobody was committing acts of espionage against the team.

Fitting that this comes about the same day when of the parking lot attendants decided to actually police where Discuss Dad parked his vehicle. A fatbody neckbeard confronted him about his choice of parking location which wasn't blocking the flow of traffic or taking up more than one slot but certainly wasn't in line with the rest of the lot filling scheme where the spaces closest to Kauffman and Arrowhead are first before populating the ones back out toward the gates was suddenly not acceptable after three years of the same procedure of taking a spot near the edge of colored pass lot.

On the one hand, Discuss Dad has absolutely zero patience and assumes people following procedure is a personal affront to him and, as a consequence, he isn't necessarily rational.

On the other hand, the first car to the *same* thing he had tried to do in the lot in that another STH chose to ignore same fatbody neckbeard, and no measure to rectify this policy violation was attempted even after his party had spilled out of their vehicle for tailgating festivities. Discuss Dad and I walked to another tailgate after dad had confronted neckbeard by asking whom he worked for (apparently "The Mexicans" as the neckbeard explained) and spent a good hour there at another slot. We returned to his car to get his phone to see that the first car to ignore the neckbeard by tailgating away from how cars are supposed to be arrayed in a lot was now joined by a handful of other cars whom had apparently also ignored the directives to park in the slots as we were told to.

Again, Discuss Dad doesn't do himself a lot to earn the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the Hellerian bureaucracy that is being a STH, but if what he did in ignoring the parking attendants to get a spot where he can quickly leave the lot is now impermissible even though several other fans were not policed the same way doesn't make any sense given that the other cars were parked in other rows and definitely not in some sort of assigned pattern. In my view, either neckbeard and his other orange safety vested compatriots make everyone abide by the rules (even my dad) or they don't do anything outside of ensuring cars don't take up more than one slot (which isn't anywhere close to what Discuss Dad had tried to do). Like with the lady's camera, I don't understand why today it was an issue when it wasn't so in the previous twenty games or so when ancillary minutiae became a priority to the Pioli regime.

Finally, what was a nice little cherry on top of the least enjoyable KC win since the post-Belcher game against Carolina, was the fact the seats right next to Discuss Dad and I were occupied by three New Yorker Steeler fans -one or two of which decided to crack wise about how funny the name 'Joe Delaney' appeared on a jersey or on the stadium itself. Dad pointed out that he died trying to save kids from drowing and that temporarily shut them up, but I was still left with the impression those three middle aged douches had their heads firmly up their ass to not have enough sense to to withhold commentary about coaches or players that they had no clue about even though they were shelling out a decent amount of cash for seats at a place they'd probably never set foot in. It had been one thing if they were making puns about Nunez-Roches or some shit or even taking shots on Derrick Thomas having multiple children. But making light of Delaney is no different than making airplane jokes at Marshall or clock tower references at a Texas game. It's one thing to talk some smack about current or recent players/coaches/front office personnel, but a completely different thing to talk about long past players that didn't do anything to earn notoriety in that kind of aspect.

Maybe I just expected more class out of middle to upper class citizens from the greatest city in America or whatever. I'm probably in the wrong here.

Excellent write up! Thanks for posting this, I skipped the game this week and spent the day touring beautiful sites in Missouri instead. Fort Osage-did a photo shoot for my daughter, her boyfriend and their new puppy. Marshall-had a nice picnic on the square and took shots of the Jim the Wonder Dog park-very interesting story. We listened on the radio as the Chiefs kicked field goals and played liked the Chiefs most of the game.

We were taking a tour of the Bothwell Lodge State Park in Sedalia when my son checked the score and they ended up winning.

This was my favorite game of the year. Being outside and enjoying the amazing Missouri fall weather instead of watching the same ol' Chiefs.
