Cowboys keep McCarthy...

Per Schefter...

This just in: Dallas is not making a head-coaching change and Cowboys’ HC Mike McCarthy is returning for the 2024 season, per sources.

Getting Parsons and Lamb at 12 and 17 respectively has saved that franchise. I'm not sure how much of that credit belongs to McCarthy.
Yes but I'm used to seeing McCarthy choke away seasons with Aaron Rodgers in his prime. The fact that his incompetence wasn't total enough to completely erase a top NFL roster means he's over-achieving based on who I consider him to be.

Oh he's always had solid regular season runs before eating shit in the playoffs.

And combined with the ability of the Cowboys to disappoint in the post-season, this really was something of a foregone conclusion. You have a Wonder-Twins Power scenario here.

Dallas and McCarthy were made for each other. The ways they'll be able to rip the hearts out of Cowboys fans are truly only limited by your imagination.

Meh. I've been one of McCarthy's more vocal detractors for decades, and his game management in this season's playoffs didn't do anything to change my mind about him.

However, the Dallas Defense's complete inability to stop the run was what sunk the Cowboys more than anything else, even more so than McCarthy's numerous failings.

They need to acquire some run-stuffing DTs more than they need to hire a new HC, imo.

Cowboys got a lot of attention because they blew out a lot of really bad teams in prime time. The signs of being a fraud were there, Buffalo and SF kicked the shit out of the Cowboys so it shouldn’t have been a surprise that an up and coming team like Green Bay walked into the yard and made the Cowboys their bitch.

Rodgers underperformed in most of those games.

McCarthy got the blame but Rodgers pulled plenty of Peyton Manning performances in the playoffs.

Dallas' real issue is overpaying Dak.

McCarthy got the best years out of Dak.

Dak simply isn't good enough for the playoffs.

Jerry - set down your burdens, buddy. You've been a GREAT owner - the Cowboys are relevant because of your commitment to the franchise. They're also mediocre because you refuse to delegate.

Are you THAT hell-bent on re-writing history? Is it that important to you that you're seen as the 'architect' of the early 90s Cowboys? And do you think winning with McCarthy will actually DO that?

I just don't get it.
Remember Al Davis? I see a lot of similarities.

I'm excited to see what Jerry non-news will dominate all the NFL pundit shows tomorrow!

Jerry says the Cowboys will not tear down their stadium and build a new one in 2024. This is big news! Let's talk about it for an hour.

Big Mike has a better playoff record than Tomlin and also won a SB (and Tomlin also had a franchise QB), yet everybody strokes Tomlin. I wouldn't have any problem with this. McCarthy has won a ton of games. Nobody wins that game with the QB floating pick sixes and the defensive coordinator having a mental breakdown. The only thing McCarthy could have done was override the DCordinator but that could have gotten him in even deeper shit with the owner.

Both Tomlin and FatCarthy should be fired.

Or in Tomlin’s case an “amicable split”… he’s been there 17 years and the franchise has clearly stagnated.

Just keeping a HC for the sake of “consistency” when the only constant is mediocrity is a flawed premise.

Tomlin has a SB as well. McCarthy never coached in the AFC at the height of Manning/Brady either. Not defending Tomlin but it’s hard to compare both.

Yep. Plus, Rodgers is a better QB than Roethlisberger. A higher ceiling. The Packers are a bigger failure over the last 15 seasons than the Steelers, mostly because of the competition in each Conference as you stated.

That said, Tomlin is overrated. The media protects him well.

McCarthy built an elite offense. His playoff losses were Rodgers choking or the defense being terrible.

Tomlin won with Cowher's players and wasted prime Big Ben years because his defense was bad.

That is the difference. Tomlin's specialty choked.

If it were any other year I don’t think he should be fired… yet. But this is the best year to need a HC, and he probably could have had his pick of the litter. Harbaugh probably wouldn’t have been a fit.. because of ego and control. But Vrabel and Bill would have been instant upgrades.

It is funny seeing McCarthys record and playoff record next to John Harbaugh and Tomlin. McCarthy is what he is, but he’s been a punching bag while others get away with the one and dones
