The "Official" Cardinals Discussion Thread.

Figured that if we had one thread to discuss Cardinals "stuff" it would be easier to find. What do you think? Good idea?

Fans streamed out of Busch Stadium admiring their team’s persistence but disappointed with its inability to close out home victories.
This is a team that could sure use relief help. And another big hitter would help, too, with Chris Duncan injured and Rick Ankiel limited by his muscle strain.

But there were no sensible trades for general manager John Mozeliak to pursue as the waivers-free deadline arrived. Like other contending teams, the Cards refused to sacrifice long-term assets for short-term help.
FoxSports.com baseball scribe Dayn Perry applauded management’s decision to stand pat:

“The Cards have an improving farm system, and they wisely resisted dipping into it at the deadline. They're very much in contention, but they recognized that the recent return of Chris Carpenter and the forthcoming return of Adam Wainwright will do more for their playoff hopes than any deal they could've made. Well played by John Mozeliak and company.”
So the Cards play on with what they have. The lessons learned during the weeks ahead will pay dividends for years to come.

Mather is getting his chance to grow. In his limited exposure to big league pitching, he has delivered four doubles, five homers and 12 RBIs. He also has drawn seven walks and scored 13 times.

He plays three outfield spots as well as the corner infield posts. He is a terrific athlete, a big man who glides around the field with ease. But there are many things he is seeing for the first time, like that nasty Lidge slider.
McClellan has been the team’s most valuable reliever, appearing in 54 games (a team high), pitching 59 2/3 innings and recording a 2.87 earned-run average. Manager Tony La Russa puts him into a lot of tough spots -- and the kid usually comes through.

Rookie Chris Perez earlier made 23 Cards appearances, posting a 2-1 record and striking out 22 batters in 23 innings. To excel at this level, he will need a better slider and better command of his fastball -– but he can contribute immediately with his power arm.

Rookie Brian Barton is a solid extra outfielder, adding some much-needed speed to the team mix. Stavinoha, an all-star at Memphis this season, adds additional outfield depth when multiple injuries strike.

Garcia, the organization’s top starting pitching prospect, has made himself useful as a second bullpen lefty. Rookie Mitchell Boggs won three games as a fill-in starter earlier this year and is 7-1 with a 2.98 ERA in 15 Memphis starts.

And there is more good news down on the farm. Top prospect Colby Rasmus was starting to wear out Triple-A pitcher before injuries derailed him. His sprained knee kept him from joining the U.S. Olympic team in Beijing.

David Freese, acquired from San Diego in the Jim Edmonds deal, made a nice jump from Class A to AAA. He is batting .296 with 19 homers and 68 RBIs.

Pitchers Clayton Mortensen (Memphis) and Jess Todd (Springfield) could help next season. The same goes for reliever Jason Motte, who is overpowering Pacific Coast League hitters.

Shortstop Tyler Greene, a former No. 1 pick, finally got hot at Springfield and hit his way to Memphis. Outfielder Jon Jay also played his way out of Springfield and started well (7 for 22) at the Class AAA level.

After a tough year at Quad Cities last year, outfielder Daryl Jones stormed through Palm Beach to Springfield. He is becoming a front-burner prospect in a hurry. Former No. 1 picks Pete Kozma (shortstop) and Brett Wallace (3B/1B) are both hitting well at Quad Cities.

How much progress has been made? If all their key free agents departed after the season, the team would not be decimated. Kids could move in to fill the gaps.

With a third of the payroll potentially evaporating, Mozeliak could lock Ankiel into a long-term deal, re-sign Kyle Lohse, seek more offense at shortstop and add free-agent help to the bullpen and rotation -– all without moving any of the top prospects.

The franchise is in very good shape. And while it seems early to send Garcia out to face Ryan Howard or to send Mather in against Lidge as the final out, there is much to be gained from doing so.

Granted, when others start grouping idiot Cardinal fans with knowledgable ones, that's what pisses me off.

Like I said, I haven't been on here in a while, hopefully he's gotten his sh*t together.

The future's so bright.... I gotta wear shades. Glad to see farm system producing quality again.

Lidge didn't carve up Mather and Stavinoha, they did it to themselves. When he gets in a jam, he throws nothing but the slider, and he doesn't throw it in the zone. If they would have just taken the first two pitches from him, they could have gotten a pitch to hit, or he would have overthrown his fastball and sailed two of them up there.

You just have to let him make mistakes.

Thats part of the deal. Lidge is hot this year. He's performing at the highest level. He's making All-Stars look foolish. The rooks will do better next time. Remember the Pujols at bat against Lidge before the homer in 2005? Pujols struck out horribly lunging at a pitch in the dirt lost his balance etc. The next at bat? One of the hardest hit balls I've ever seen.

Its easy to handle these horrible games or at least tolerate them without kicking the dog because we won it all in 2006 and all the glowing reports on the prospects down on the farm that are looking ready to contribute in 2009 and 2010.
