Collins out 3-4 weeks l Jared Allen demoted to 2nd string...

Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005 Afternoon
K.C. Chiefs Training Camp Daily Updates

It was a beautiful afternoon for practice today as the Chiefs took the field in shells under clear skies. The temperature was a pleasant 83 degrees and the dew point was 49 degrees. The wind was from the west at 0.4 miles per hour. There were 170 fans in attendance.

Offense

Practice was noticeably quicker today with energy and enthusiasm by the entire team. Throughout the practice all of the squads hurried on change-ups in the drills. The plays in 11s were crisp, with both the offense and the defense increasing the pace of play after a disappointing performance in the Vikings game. Coach Dick Vermeil after practice told the players in their huddle that he was proud of their enthusiasm and hustle.

Guard Will Shields returned to practice this afternoon. Coach Vermeil was pleased to see him on the field, but wants to take it slow with him. "It's an addition to the security blanket to see Will out on the field. We won't push him too fast; he'll be playing team situations, hopefully, by the end of this week."

At the beginning of practice the running backs worked on taking hand offs and running the ball. During the drill, Running Back Coach James Saxon said, "hug that..... hug it, hug it!"

In the first series of 11-on-11s wide receiver Craphonso Thorpe completed a tough, leaping catch for a gain of 11-yards from quarterback James Kilian.

During one series of 11-on-11's running back Priest Holmes took four hand offs from quarterback Trent Green . Holmes had a nice burst up the middle for a gain of 25-yards.

In the same series, wide receiver Chris Horn had a great catch from quarterback Damon Huard for a gain of 16-yards.

During 7-on-7 drills this afternoon there were many great plays completed. Tight end Kris Wilson had a great outstretched catch in the end zone for a yardage gain of 25-yards. Wilson received the pass from quarterback Trent Green. Running back Priest Holmes received a short pass from quarterback Damon Huard. Holmes then had a great run for a gain of 30-yards. Wide receiver John Booth had an outstanding one-handed catch from Huard for a gain of 35-yards. Huard also connected with wide receiver Jeris McIntyre for a juggling catch for a gain of 15-yards.

During the final series of 11-on-11s running back Larry Johnson took a hand off from quarterback Trent Green, and had a great run up the right hand side for a gain of 15-yards. After the play, Coach Vermeil offered a hearty, "That a way Johnny!"

Also in the final series of 11-on-11s Trent Green handed the ball to running back Dee Brown who then pitched the ball to running back Larry Johnson on an half-back option play that stymied the defense, leading to a total gain of 50-yards.

Vermeil discussed kicker Lawrence Tynes' performance from Friday night that included a missed field goal and an out-of-bounds kick-off that put the ball on the Chiefs 40. Vermeil said he is debating whether or not he will bring in an additional kicker for the rest of camp. "I'm not sure. I'm back and forth. I believe he's a good kicker. I was really pleased with his kickoffs, other than the one he kicked out of bounds. I loved his 51-yarder (field goal): I hated the short one that he missed. He just hasn't been as consistent on the practice field this year as he was last year. That worries me more than just the performance the other night," Vermeil said.

Quarterback Todd Collins did not practice today after injuring himself Friday night. Collins is expected to be out for three to four weeks, with a cracked bone in his left hand. Collins said that it is swollen and sore, but it is feeling better today than it did yesterday.

Tight end Tony Gonzalez did not practice today, due to a swollen pinky. Gonzalez injured his finger Friday night, and was sore today. Yesterday he had a hard workout out session, during a special conditioning training session for injured players. His foot, which was bothering him last week, did not give him any trouble.

Tight end Edwin Thompson was the final person off the field today.

Defense

Coach Dick Vermeil today said that practice was very good this afternoon, and that he was very pleased. "Sometimes after you take some time off, it's never long enough when you come back. They came back and really went to work with great quickness and enthusiasm," Vermeil said. While lining up for the plays, the team ran to their spots. Teammates on the sidelines were also much more supportive, yelling out plays and helping each other out.

Vermeil discussed defensive tackle Junior Siavii and safety Greg Wesley, after the two got into a fracas in Minneapolis during their Saturday night off. "I don't know much more about it than you do right now, but I'm finding out more," Vermeil told reporters. " I haven't talked to anyone officially about it." Wesley practiced today; however, Siavii did not. He sat out with a swollen knee acquired in Friday night's game.

Linebacker Rich Scanlon did not practice this afternoon. Scanlon was out with a muscle strain and Vermeil wanted to hold him out because of it. Fellow linebacker Keyaron Fox also left practice early for the training room. Fox thought that it was only a cramp; however, it was a hamstring strain. Safety Jerome Woods also did not practice, with an inflammated knee.

Vermeil discussed after practice the experience that Friday night's game gave to several of the young up and coming players on the team. "Overall we got something out of it. I think our young kids will really grow from that experience. Young kids like Derrick Johnson, people we're really counting on. Boomer (Grigsby) on kickoff coverage and the little things he made bad mistakes with. Well, he won't make that same mistake this week. I sense on the field that they are more confident now. They've lined up and played in the National Football League for the first time," Vermeil said.

The first line of the defense had a change today. Defensive end Jared Allen, who started 10 games his rookie season, was moved down to the second line during practice. Allen only played with the first line when it was with the specialty unit. The first team of the defensive line today was Eric Hicks, Ryan Sims, Lional Dalton, and Jimmy Wilkerson.

During 11-on-11s, cornerback Patrick Surtain had good penetration on quarterback Trent Green and flushed him out of the pocket. Later, defensive tackle Montique Sharpe sacked quarterback Damon Huard in the backfield. Huard was again sacked by linebacker Kris Griffin minutes later.

The third line of defense today made several strong plays against the offense. The defense showed strong line play, stopping every run the offense tried. However, they showed weak secondary play by allowing every pass play to be completed.

A weakness the second line defense showed today was that it failed to put pressure against the first line offense. Quarterback Trent Green had over six seconds on many plays, and was able to make complete passes.

Cornerback Patrick Surtain and safety Sammy Knight teamed up to make a big play together. Green threw from the pocket to tight end Kris Wilson. Wilson was double covered, and Knight was able to intercept the ball. Knight began to run down the field for about 25 yards. As defenders were about to tackle him, Surtain, who trailed about five yards behind on the right, yelled to Knight, who lateraled the ball to Surtain. The corner would have easily picked up another 10 to 15 yards, and probably could have returned in the pick for a touchdown.

Special Teams

During special teams practice this afternoon kicker Lawrence Tynes attempted three field goals, which were all successful. Two of them were at 38-yards and one at 44.

Also during special teams practice, kickoff coverage was especially emphasized. The receiving team stayed consistent throughout the drill. The unit consisted of Kevin DeRonde, John Booth, Johnathan Ingram, Mike Kallfelz, Shaunard Harts, Craphonso Thorpe, McKenzi Smith, Montique Sharpe, Darius Jones, Will Svitek, and Jeremy Parquet.

Four punts were also completed today. Punter Dustin Colquitt and punter Nick Murphy both attempted two. The punters were working on getting close to the goal line this afternoon.

Kick off returns were worked on also. William Bartee, Kris Wilson, Scott Fujita, Gary Stills, Marc Boerigter, Quinton Caver, Jordan Black, Jimmy Wilkerson, Jared Allen, Richard Smith, and Samie Parker were all apart of the first unit. Smith, Parker, and Sapp all returned the ball during this drill.

A valid rumor, maybe, but a rumor nonetheless.

Of all the things we could criticize Carl "5 year plan" Peterson for, why is it necessary to invent things?

i didn't invent the rumor and you can't disprove the rumor

so what's your point

and why would they take their entire clock if they were considering alternatives?

No, I can't prove or disprove it. All the more reason my point is valid.

My point is that it doesn't matter. The guy has ****ed up more drafts than I care to remember, and yet people are criticizing him for a draft that WASN'T ****ED UP.

I don't know why they took the entire clock. I've never sat in on an NFL team's draft before. Have you?

Allen getting moved to the second string is likely a direct reaction to his F'up on the Mewelde Moore 50 yarder. Gun ought to have him practicing flattening down the LOS to shut off the cut-back lane until his legs fall off. He'll most likely be back with the first string before long. At least he (and maybe the rest of the team) knows that mistakes like that can cost you your position.

As for Collins' injury, I don't mind Killian getting a few more reps. I would like to see him run a series against AZ's first or second string units. IMO he was more impressive than Huard against MIN, but who knows how much of that had to do with the quality of the defense he was playing against. I say mix him and Huard up a little. Give him every chance to try to win the 3rd string job.

If someone offered you their entire 2006 and 2007 drafts for the right to draft Johnson, would it be worth it? Of course it would. Carl was right to use the entire clock even if it was unlikely that anyone would make an offer he could accept.

It's NOT a valid rumor just because he took the entire clock. It is a completely unjustified leap of logic to conclude that Carl must have been making an offer that he couldn't find a taker for just because he waited out the clock. It might just be your opinion, but it's a dumbass opinion.

unjustified leap of logic?? ......... so in your vast wisdom, the chiefs sat on their entire clock time because they were having drinks or something.

they were just so happy that Johnson fell to them they they had a mini party and almost forget to make the selection?

a dumb ass like yourself judging my opinion to be bad is a definite compliment.

so thanks

Why start the name calling? Its just an opinion. Everyone has one. Let them voice it without the name calling. That too much to ask?
