2010 Kansas City Royals Repository thread

All Royals All The Time!

After consultation with others who peruse the game threads we decided to create this as a repository for all things Royals. Minor league news, AL (ahem) Central (thanks Vonne) news and anything Royals can be found here.

alnorth, me and atleast 5 others will continue the game threads as usual. But if you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

If a big story breaks, you can still start a thread about it. There is merely an all inclusive thread that will make a easy for us all to keep up with all things Royals.

Welcome! "Grab a Brew... don't cost nuthin"...[spills beer on feet]

It's been mentioned a few times that the Royals were surprised by Maier's progress in Spring Training, and even that they wouldn't have signed Ankiel had they known Meier was going to progress like that.

The guy didn't exactly show much last year... certainly not enough to expect even the modest hitting performance he's putting up this season.

All that aside... He's a decent fourth outfielder, really. I certainly hope they have a better option than him as the starting CF next year.

Ankiel didn't show shit last year either except that he could get hurt. I really wonder what team would've signed him if we didn't. He sure as hell wouldn't be making the money he is now.

What would you have done? Pencil in Maier as the everyday CF in the offseason?

Try to sign another free agent CF? The ancient and expensive Mike Cameron? The ancient Jim Edmonds? Rocco Baldelli? Elijah Dukes?

Just curious where you're coming from. What was the correct course of action, in your mind?

When Ankiel was signed, Rany had an update about how we essentially paid more to get "like" or "less" production than we would have gotten out of Maier.

If Rany knows, our GM should know, too. Given where we're at now, yes, Mitch should have been penciled in as the starter in the off-season. Youth plays at this point. Savvy vet signing? Ok, but that doesn't describe the Ankiel acquisition.

My "Huh??" reaction when we first signed Ankiel has now blossomed into a full on "WTF??!!!" reaction.

Played Maier at CF, easily...or gasp let Pods do it. Ankiel didn't need to be signed, wow lets add a guy who is only going to play 1 year....he wasn't going to come back if he did well.

Exactly. Put DeJesus in left, Pods in center, and Meier in right. Why so difficult?

On the other hand, Ankiel is one of the very few players on the team with any power potential whatsoever, so I could see the potential of trying to get lightning in a bottle. But with these types of moves, I think you need to have a fairly quick hook when it becomes clear things aren't working.

I still like the story of Ankiel i heard during spring training. He apparently would do stupid shit like bump guys arms who were signing cards for kids...and mess up the sig. Also he doesn't like to talk to the media much either about anything really. He's a waste of a spot as well, i was hoping at best he hit some HR's and got traded for a C level prospect. That said, Ankiel has power, but he wasn't going to get us in the playoffs by any stretch, so wtf is the point

What, and admit to a bad signing? Unpossible!

Rick Ankiel-OF- Royals May. 24 - 2:24 pm et

Rick Ankiel (quadriceps) is "getting closer" to gaining clearance for a minor league rehab assignment.
Ankiel has been out since April 24, when he stained his quad in the fifth inning while legging out a grounder. He should only require a few games at the minor league level, but it's doubtful he's back by the end of May.

I was a fan of getting someone to play CF besides Maier. Would have been fine with stopping at Podsednik.

He's a good no. 4 OF. I'm just not that excited about him as an everyday starter. He isn't a great defender (zone rating in bottom five of MLB starters) and he doesn't hit for enough power - or have enough sb potential - to be much of an everyday offensive threat.

They needed to add an OF. Ankiel was a boom or bust signing that so far has backfired, but at least they didn't tie up a ton of money in Ankiel or someone like Cameron.

I actually was hoping they'd take a run at Marlon Byrd, but I understand being skeptical of his one-year numbers...

Derrick Robinson can start hitting better we have a CF'er...he has done much better this year so far. I like Maier as a 4th of'er but i wouldve just taken the bullet and let him play all year, we need to know what we have honestly.
