it's the scheme ... the 2-gap 3-4 scheme generally makes Dlineman look like shit. If you want to judge a guy in our scheme then you judge them by how they protect the linebackers.

Which is why i say that drafting DE's for our scheme should be mid round picks. It's just too hard to find a Reggie White to keep dumping high draft picks on the attempt.

You want a guy with natural leverage and strength who is great at hand fighting. You can find those in the mid rounds. Save the high picks for positions with a greater chance to be game-changers.

A good 5-tec is one of the harder positions to fill with a difference making player.

NEs defense was really really good because they had 3 high picks on the DL that made the rest of the defenses job easier.

Their job is to neutralize 2 linemen all game long...anyone that thinks any old slapdick can do that doesn't understand the duties of a 2 gap 5tec.

That being said I think Dorsey has improved in making the change but I still say it was wrong to draft him for a 3-4 to begin with.

No. Their job in this defense is the same as the job of all defensive linemen -- stop the run and rush the passer. Here is the sack totals of the NYG DEFENSIVE LINE under Bill Parcells, Bill Belicheck and Romeo Crennel during each of the first five seasons;

When Chiefs first-round NT Dontari Poe reported to camp, he found someone in front of him. Anthony Toribo was the starter ahead of Poe, a designation likely used as a motivation tactic by head coach Romeo Crennel, who is quite aware of Poe’s college reputation of not always playing to his talent level and athleticism. But it’s not the entire story, either. Toribo has impressed Crennel with his technique and just might carve out a defined role in the defensive rotation, even after Poe beats him out for a starting spot eventually.

Patriots defensive line sack from the starters totals from 2003-2008:

2003: 11
2004: 12
2005: 5.5
2006: 12.5
2007: 14
2008: 12

The best 3-4 D-line of the last decade never got over 15 sacks from the starters.

Poe never required motivation to work harder in college. His reputation in college of not playing to his abilities can be blamed 100% on poor technique.

Toribio will get beat out by Powe/Dorsey/Gordon. Easily.
