MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

I'm not saying I know. I'm offering an alternative narrative to 'Alex shit his pants on an no-brainer and simply spazzed over to the sidelines.' It's possible he was a good soldier, AND it's possible he should have chucked being the good soldier and heaved something Hill's way, given how the play unfolded.
He should have thrown the ball to Hill. The play was there and I think Hill is more than capable of adjusting on the fly to the ball being thrown to him and Smith should have been more than capable of trusting him to do so.

Plenty of players to blame for the game, but this play is on Smith. As were many other throws, including the second 2PT conversion play. Although I just can't get mad at him on that play considering what happened the play before. He did however miss a wide open Hill on that play to throw to a triple-covered Maclin.

In his defense. They instruct soccer goalies to throw like that because you can tear the rotator cuff throwing those bigger balls the normal way. I'd throw like that if I was a NFL QB as well.

You're a liar dude. That pass you gif'd up was the only one that was off. Landry and Alex beat Odell Beckham's and Cousins' time in the same event moments later. Smith did nothing to embarrass himself so far.. but that one pass you noted was shit.

That gif of Hill running wide open was one of at least 2 times that happened in the game. Tomlin KNEW Smith wasn't going to take those shots, so he cheated corners and backers up all game long to blitz and keyed his defense on the short stuff.

Alex Smith simply refused to make that defense pay by being agressive and we lost the game because of it.

It's as simple as that.

That gif pisses me off every time I watch it because you can clearly see Alex never even looks at Hill. He simply doesn't trust himself to make the throw.

Watch his helmet...he immediately looks at Maclin and the. Scans to see the defender cheating and looking to break up the pass....never even looks at Hill.

For a QB to win a superbowl, he needs to ability to diagnose coverage. Smith should have seen presnap that it was zone and that he had to get the ball to either Maclin or Hill unless the safety cheated over...once the safer stayed put and the corner sat on Maclins route, he NEEDS to have the anticipation to just throw it up to Hill.

I'm surprised the other gif hasn't been posted, Hill was wide open like that twice. You could see it clear as day from the stands.

It's pretty clear that Tyreek was aggressively used as a decoy early in this game. My sense is, he was sent on the pattern with instructions to operate as a decoy, probably to draw the FS, which he got at least a strong lean out of him [though Kelce contributed to that as well]. The RB out of the backfield running to the top of the screen was probably designed to do a more aggressive fly pattern, and Alex ranged right to set up for a pass over the man coverage, without the FS in danger of ranging over.

Should we have an offensive system where Tyreek AND Smith instinctively know that when he's coming that wide open to ditch the decoy pretense and go with it? Perhaps.

Was the RB wrong to sit down as long as he did under the coverage before running fly? He's opening wide, as wide as Reek on the other side, when Smith runs out of real estate.

Was the play that resulted due to Smith being locked in to Reek being a decoy, or was it Smith being convinced that Reek would not be ready for a pass since he went out as a decoy? Who knows.

But I don't think it was a brain fart or a panic. Smith was designed to roll out right. Only the spy was tracking him down too fast, and the RB ran past coverage too late.
Hill is looking back for the ball as soon as he gets about 10-15 yards down field.

I tore my labrum throwing a dodgeball overhand when I was 23; had a girl on my own team ducking in front of me who stood up just as I was ready to release so I tried to drop it down around her head rather than smoke her in the dome and just wrecked my shoulder (this is why women shouldn't be allowed in foxholes, that kind of situational awareness is just inexcusable...)

More than a decade later my arm is still hamburger after back to back nights of softball. We played flag football last weekend and I quarterbacked for about half of it and by the end I couldn't raise my elbow parallel to my ear and the best I could do was about 25-30 yards downfield even if I stepped into it. Now I never had a D1 caliber cannon, but my arm was my strength as a baseball player and that's an easy 15-20 yard hit in what I could do before the injury. I can't even hit 60 on a gun anymore whereas I could hit 80 on occasion in college. Ortho has said there's no point in surgery because there are enough small tears in the shoulder that he'd have to stitch up a dozen different spots and the odds of them all healing right are so remote that I might as well just focus on pain management. He said I can't really hurt it any worse, so if I can grit through it, I'll be fine.

All from a single awkward throw with a goddamn dodgeball. So yeah, I kinda give Smith a pass for that one. Throwing a dodgeball overhand can **** things up quite a bit if you're just a bit off and for someone that makes his living throwing a football, I'd probably have sat it out entirely.

Still pretty funny though.

yep. He's been hangin' on one of my old SF forums.. jacking off the few remaining Smith-haters just like him. Alex has owned his world for the last 4 years, LOL.

I'm fine with Smith moving on or retiring, but I absolutely love that Smith as their QB is making people like him miserable... it's so glorious and well deserved.

I know and it's one of 2-3 times it happened that game.

For a QB that's supposed to be one of the smartest in the game, he is terrible at identifying coverages presnap and throwing with anticipation due to being prepared.

I'm fine with Smith at QB next year while a stud rookie is groomed to take over in 2018...but this team needs to make a significant move to get a stud for the future.
