2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread
2012 Slogan: Our Time
A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year (from Great Expectations) An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division (from alnorth) With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore. We do not have starting pitching. Oh yeah, we've also got this: Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us. Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here. What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that: Quote:

And this would be another reason not to get too attached to prospects. Not only do they routinely fail and not reach their expectations, they also can get dealt before even being given the chance to fail.
Not to say that this isn't a very steep price to pay for Shields and Davis (both of whom are pitchers that I like quite a bit after watching them regularly for their entire careers), many of you are taking for granted that Myers will be this all-star type player when you just can't assume that. He could very well be a damn good one and that will hurt if it happens, but there is a non-zero possibility that he won't be. From everything I've heard and read about him, Myers is not the next Mike Trout here. He has some red flags. Shields has been better over the last two seasons than the guy who just got 150M from the Dodgers. In fact, only Verlander, Felix, Price, and CC have been better than him in the AL in recent seasons. That is a significant (albeit short-term) upgrade for KC. Davis is also a guy that I've thought to be better than his peripherals. He always pitched well against NYY as a SP and flat out owned the Jays during his time in Tampa. He should slot in as a decent enough 4/5 if they choose to make him a starter, which should be an upgrade on what they have before. The goal now for the Royals has to be to improve their team immediately for 2013 and that means trying to get an upgrade on Francoeur. You can't stop here. This just pushed up the window for contention, Glass might even want to spend some money to do it this time. Last edited by KC_Connection; 12-10-2012 at 06:15 AM.. |

I'm okay with this. When I saw the news, my heart started racing. I want this to work out so badly, and I think it will.

They're giving up a ton of club control (probably too much), but this is the kind of win-now move for pitching that many fans here have been asking for for a while now. The only thing they can do now is try to make the best of it. The shitty AL Central is there for the taking and the Royals are now in the conversation to actually win it if they finish the job here and keep improving. |

After having all night to think about it I'm ok with it. We aren't going to win anything without pitching. Myers could become a stud. COULD. We would still be short a lot on the top of the rotation.
I think people are forgetting how good James Shields is.. Dude is a freaking stud. He has 2 years of control. So what? If you thought we were going to get a guy with 4-5 years left we would have been giving up more than just a top rated prospect. MLB talent > AAA talent. |

If you want one of the top pitchers, you have to give up a lot. Now, I will not make the argument that Shields is one of the top pitchers, he's a nice 2, not necessarily a 1. However, how many #1's were available? Zero. Shields is the closest you could get. 2-3 years ago Wade Davis was in the top 25 prospects-list-wise.

Over the last two seasons, Shields is 9th in both leagues in pitching fWAR between Hamels and Greinke.
http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.asp...ter=&players=0 I suspect the fact that Shields is not a "name" guy or that hyped up is causing some of the negative reaction. He's really very good. Two years of him was never going to come cheap. |

All ill say is that Hosmer and Moose better become stars. Not just average or "ok", but pure stars. We need them to be 30-40 HR guys.

Bob Fescoe wants you to call in if you don't like this trade. He is probably going to light you up unless you come correct. If you call, throw in a shoutout to Mr. Flopnuts.

maybe the Royals weren't as high on Myers as everyone else?
could be why they didn't bring him up and 'expose him' this year and perhap lower his value. I dunno, i got nothin'
